Light rubbing and shelf-wear to covers slight warping. Envelope worn and rubbed some small tears. A VG catalogue in an About VG envelope. 102 4 "Indice General" - Index pp. Many color illustrations throughout. Oblong format: 9" x 12-5/8" This an exceedingly scarce dealership showroom catalogue in Spanish for the 1941 Ford passenger models and trucks which were introduced in October of 1940. These models included the Special the De Luxe and Super De Luxe sedans convertible cabriolet Woody Station Wagon and Coupes and others. These cars came equipped with the new 226 cubic inch L-head straing-6 and rated at 90 horsepower. The 221 cubic inch V8 remained the standard for the De Luxe and Super De Luxe models . Ford thoroughly updated their models for the 1941 model year with wide bodies that nearly covered the running boards. The front and rear fenders came in several pieces instead of just one and were now more integrated into the body and pushed the headlights up and out over the front wheels. Of interest is that this Spanish-market catalogue also integrates the 1941 truck and heavy truck models on the eve of World War II. Those include the 1 ton stake truck commercial panel trucks and vans cab-over heavy trucks and the Heavy Duty Stake among others. No institutional holdings located on OCLC. Rare. Contemporary ownership inscription on front pastedown contemporary notations to several leaves. Regimental roster for the Second Nebraska Volunteers mustered into service for the Spanish American War at Lincoln in May 1898. The regiment consisted of forty-six officers and 975 enlisted men each detailed herein by company. The regiment never saw active duty spending time training at Chickamauga before being transferred to Omaha and then mustered out in October of the same year. This copy with the ownership inscription of Irene G. Courtnay dated September 2 1898. Irene has made notations about several of the men -- presumably friends or acquaintances -- in the Remarks section of some pages. On the page for Company B she has written "Ernest G. Briggs drowned in Chickamauga Creek. 1st death in 2nd Neb. Regiment." Rare and likely produced in limited numbers for friends and family. Only a single photocopy reproduction located in OCLC. The paper was founded in 1896 by the popular Spanish novelist and journalist Vicente Blasco IbaÃ±ez. During the Second Republic under the management of IbaÃ±ez's nephew Sigfrido the paper became more politically aligned eventually becoming the organ of the Syndicalists in 1932; it ceased publication with the end of the Republic in 1939. One of three issues of this scarce Spanish- American War periodical published on board Dewey's flagship Olympia in Manila Bay. There was a total of seven numbers of this naval periodical the first two published in Nagasaki the third in Yokohama the fourth in Hong Kong and numbers five to seven in Manila. The present issue entirely devoted to the Battle of Manila Bay is among the most desirable and contains American accounts and a translated Spanish account of the battle several poems and a map of the scene of action made by a sailor "with a couple of sail needles." The magazine was written and edited by Apprentice First Class Louis Stanley Young and printed by Harry B. Glover on paper captured from the "Commandancia General del Arsenal de Cavite." Young a former printer himself improvised a print shop in a torpedo room on board the Olympia. An illustration of the Liberty Bell two flags an American eagle etc. is printed on the front wrapper in black red and blue. "A historic piece one of major proportions" - Moebs. The unlikeliest of publishing endeavors during the depredations of wartime: an avant-garde large-format lavishly illustrated journal of architecture and decorative arts issued no less under the auspices of an anarchist workers federation. The editors intended to usher in a new era of progressivism and modernism following the defeat of the fascist rebels in the July Barcelona uprising of 1936 ".aquel magnifico y revolucionario 19 de julio tan digno y decisivo; no solo como fin de etapa sino tambien como prologo de una etapa nueva repleta de posibilidades consequidas ya en parte ye en parte perfiladas no siempre malogradas." and the magazine fashioned itself upon the model of such avant-garde revolutionary journals as the Soviet Union's USSR in Construction and the American Labor Defender with bold photo-montage layouts and modernist typography. The timing was not propitious. By December 1937 the Republic was mired in an increasingly hopeless civil war and the glorious New Era that had seemed so certain in July of 1936 was now a rapidly fading hope. The magazine appears to have lasted for only a single issue before folding; today it is extremely rare with no examples in North America and only two physical locations noted in European institutions via COPAC and OCLC Biblioteca Nacional and Bibliotheque Nanterre. BNE attributes editorship to the avant-garde graphic artist DarÃo Carmona de la Puente but this information does not appear to derive from the publication itself which makes no editorial attribution. A petition to Parliament by the officers of Lieut. Gen. George Hamilton's Regiment of Foot seeking pay due for services abroad in the War of Spanish Succession. Lord George Douglas-Hamilton 1666-1737 was a Scottish Williamite officer during the Glorious Revolution who later married William III's mistress Elizabeth Villiers became a confidant of William was created Earl of Orkney in 1696 was appointed Governor of Virginia in 1714 and in 1736 was the first British general promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. In 1701 at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession Hamilton led the First Regiment of Foot the Royal Scots to the Netherlands where the regiment fought for the remainder of the war. Despite their long service and the high position of Hamilton the officers suggest in the present petition that having been so long overseas they had been forgotten by the British government and charge that they had not received their pay even after frequent petitions. The document is an early example of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. 1898List319Massachusetts 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May 1898 and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale. The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers and also for their historical value as most contain identifications to versos. The highlight of the group is forty-four uniformly mounted portraits of soldiers nearly all identified measuring 3 Â¾ x 2 Â½ inches each. Other photographs include a large portrait of Captain Frederick E. Pierce with the blindstamp of Goldsmith Studio Springfield Massachusetts and a 3 Â¼ x 3 Â¼ inch square card of Capt. Pierce in Camp Turner. Also included are two slightly larger photographs on similar mounts. Overall an interesting group. Good condition overall with assorted chips and wear. unknown books

1898WRCAM46791Chickamauga Park Ga 1898. 5pp. Quarto written on "Black Hills Squadron" stationery. Old fold lines. Minor wear. Very good plus. A pair of letters written by Leighton H. Baxter to a friend back home. In his first letter he states that he is "not an enlisted soldier but has a regulation suit.a horse to ride and am fixed up very nicely. He works for the commander of the squadron Major Leigh H. French presumably as a teenage civilian clerk. His duties include "a good deal of writing to do telegrams to send take notes of cases tried in the regiment and a great many other minor duties." He sleeps in the same tent as the Major and takes his meals with the officers. He is well fed but is very glad not to be a private as they "fare badly." It is however "a regular circus to see the boys ride and shoot they beat Buffalo Bill all to pieces." Baxter reports that there are some 40000 to 50000 troops at Camp Thomas with more due to arrive. Some have already departed for "Porto Rico" and he expects his squadron to be going there at any time. In his second letter he notes that the men in his regiment are all "crack shots and fine riders" and all from around Deadwood and the Black Hills. He has been drilling with the men and has learned to handle a sword fairly well. He also mentions practicing "rough riding.such as leaping from a horse while he is running then back again picking up a hat while at full speed etc." The Third U.S. Volunteer Cavalry was mustered into service in May 1898 and commanded by Melvin Grigsby attorney general for the state of South Dakota. The unit was known both as the "Black Hills Squadron" and as "Grigsby's Cowboy Cavalry." Its commander Maj. Leigh H. French was trained as a medical doctor and surgeon and had a practice in Washington D.C. when the war broke out. One of his captains Seth Bullock was the first sheriff of Deadwood. The squadron never saw active duty outside the continental United States spending most of its brief career at Camp Thomas in Georgia. In the crowded camp in the heat of a southern summer typhus measles and other illnesses were rampant and Grigsby's Cavalry lost twenty-seven men to disease. unknown books

A rare political leaflet petitioning Parliament for relief of warrant officers who had fought in the recent War of the Spanish Succession. In March 1715 the House of Commons ordered that a list of all the regimental and warrant officers be drawn up but by the time this document was printed numerous warrant officers had not been entered into the list and rumors had begun to circulate that they would therefore not be receiving expected compensation for their service. "Besides the Nature of several of the Warrant Officers Posts was such as they could not be put on a Regimental List viz. Directors of Hospitals Commissaries Officers who have lost their Limbs and many other Officers whose particular Hardships Pretensions and Disappointments are more at large set forth and specify'd in their several Warrants. So that their Condition is very deplorable." This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Early owner signature Eyre to head of title page interior otherwise clean. $1250. Only edition. A legalistic analysis of Spanish claims advanced during the Anglo-Spanish War 1739-1748. Also known as the War of Jenkins' Ear after the conflict's flashpoint it related to Great Britain's exclusive right granted by the Treaty of Utrecht at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession 1713 to ply the slave trade and sell other goods in Spain's American colonies. This war was eventually subsumed into the War of the Austrian Succession 1742-1748. The signature in this copy may be that of Sir James Eyre 1734-1799 the notable judge later chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas. Occasional stains holes at bottom of both leaves not effecting text last page of text closely trimmed. A good copy. A four-page ballad describing the enormous storm experienced by the Spanish fleet in 1719 and of the miraculous preservation of the ships which eventually arrived safely in Cadiz. It was this same great fleet which Spain had gathered at Cadiz and Corunna for the invasion of the west of England directed by James Butler the attainted Duke of Ormonde.
