Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paquda (also: Pakuda, Bakuda, Hebrew: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ) was a Jewish philosopher and rabbi who lived at Saragossa, Spain, in the first half of the eleventh century. He is often referred to as Rabbeinu Bachya . He was the author of the first Jewish system of ethics, written in Arabic in 1040 under the title Al Hidayah ila Faraid al-Qulub, Guide to the Duties of the Heart, and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the years 1161-80 under the title Chovot ha-Levavot, Instruction in the Duties of the Heart. Little is known of his life except that he bore the title of dayan, judge at the rabbinical court. Bahya was thoroughly familiar with the Jewish rabbinic literature, as well as the philosophical and scientific Arabic, Greek and Roman literature, quoting frequently from the works of non-Jewish moral philosophers in his work (Wikipedia, 2010) . He was a relative of Meshullam ben Solomon Dapiera, who flourished, probably in southern France, in the earlier part of the thirteenth century, and who, in several extensive poems, declared against the "Moreh Nebukim" of Maimonides. Before the troubles which came upon him and the Jews in Spain generally, Dapiera seems to have been rich, and charitable to the needy. Forced to leave his native place, he took refuge in Saragossa at the house of Benveniste ben Labi, the Mæcenas of Hebrew scholars, where he became tutor to Benveniste's two sons, with one of whom, Don Vidal Joseph ibn Labi, he exchanged many letters and poems. Through the recommendation of his host, to whom he was not related, as Grätz avers, he became a favorite with Don Meïr Alguadez (Gottheil & Kayserling in EJ, 1901) . Castro (18851972) , was a Spanish historian and literary critic. Castro was a professor at the University of Madrid and later at Princeton University. He interpreted the culture and history of Spain as a result of the coming together of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, which created a peculiarly Hispanic form of life, different both from the East and from the civilization of Western Europe. The expulsion of 1492 was in Castro's view the result of uncontainable pressures from below. He believes that the preoccupation with purity of lineage in Christian Spain from the 15th century on was a transfer of a Jewish concept, due to the infiltration of converts into Christian society. The use of secrecy and informers by the Inquisition was a continuation of methods used by Jewish tribunals. Ultimately, according to Castro, it was the Jews and their descendants the Conversos who were responsible for the discrimination by the Spaniards against the New Christians because of the latter's blood or race and for the cruel and unjust methods employed by the Inquisition and the maltreatment of those who were brought to trial before it. These were all derived from Jewish sources and traditions. Castro relied on "evidence" from the Bible, from the origin of the Spanish aristocracy, from medieval Jewish authors like Santob de Carrion (Shem Tov ben Ardutiel) , R. Moses Arragel, R. Asher ben Yehiel, R. Solomon ben Adret, and others. Castro's evidence is based entirely on a basic misunderstanding of the sources, of the Jews' understanding of the biblical text, and of the essence of Jewish law (Scholberg in EJ 2007) . The photograph portrays the Spanish pianist Amparo Iturbi standing on stage next to a grand piano accepting the applause of the servicemen looking back from their seats at a table. American Theatre Wing's City Center Producer Jean Dalrymple is seated next to a sailor at bottom right. An array of flags serves as background to the stage and the pictorial banner above reads "American Theatre Wing War Service Inc. : Stage Door Canteen". The Jersey City N.J. photographer's credits are stamped on the verso and the photograph is additionally identified in pencil as "#758 Courtesy c-9-4 Amparo Iturbi" and "Amparo Iterbi / Jean Dalrymple" on the verso. There is a crease to the bottom right corner of the photograph with minor creasing to the top left corner and left edge. Very good. <p>A New York City venue run by the American Theatre Wing "The Stage Door Canteen" offered meals and entertainment free of charge to American service men during WWII. The original venue first opened in the basement of a theater on 44th Street in New York City on March 2 1942. Stage Door Canteens were eventually set up in cities throughout the country as well as in London and Paris.<p>The younger sister of Jose Iturbi the Spanish pianist Amparo Iturbi 1898-1969 was herself a well-known performer. She gave her debut concert in Barcelona when only 15 years old and played in Paris in 1925. She and her brother Jose played dual piano recitals through Italy Switzerland Belgium the Netherlands and England and she also accompanied the Catalan Soprano Maria Barrientos. Her first American performance came in 1937 and she was a pioneer of the Spanish piano repertoire prior to Alicia de Larrocha's arrival in 1965. Amparo appeared on screen with her brother Jose Iturbi in MGM's 1944 musical "Two Girls and a Sailor".<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
