189834216Atlanta: Atlanta Peace Jubilee 1898. First Edition. Broadside. Very good. Broadside. Approx. 8" x 6". Vertical fold to the paper. This broadside provides the schedule for Wednesday December 14th and Thursday December 15th. President William McKinley and his party attended this celebration having lunch before attending a public reception at the State Capitol on Wednesday. Later that day there was a floral parade and an evening reception at the Capital City Club. Thursday they had breakfast at the Kimball House followed by a Grand Parade and a Grand Banquet at 7:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. a theater party at the Grand tendered by the ladies of Jubilee Committee to Mrs. McKinley and the ladies of the Presidential Party: Sol Smith Russell being the attraction. Either the President kept late hours or the programme was inaccurate: following the theater performance the next agenda item was 11 p.m. lunch at Capitol City Club with the President and his party departing at 1:00 a.m. From Franklin Garrett's history "Atlanta Environs" vol. II pages 357-359 summarizes the celebration. Garrett states "An outstanding event in the local annals for 1898 was the Atlanta Peace Jubilee held on December 14th and December 15th celebrating the success of American arms in the late war." A publication arising from a letter signed by twelve European writers prominent in Europe including Aragon W.H. Auden Nancy Cunard Heinrich Mann Pablo Neruda Ramon Sender Tristan Tzara etc. The letter was addressed to the writers of England Scotland Ireland and Wales and asked whether they were for or against the government of Republican Spain. Somehow Ezra Pound got involved he was neutral in a combative kind of way: ''Spain is an emotional luxury to a gang of sap-headed dilettantes''. The majority of responses were in favour and these include messages from Samuel Beckett ''�Up the Republic!'' - almost the shortest contribution Kay Boyle Thomas Burke Cyril Connolly Aleister Crowley C. Day Lewis Liam O'Flaherty Ford Madox Ford David Gascoyne Victor Gollancz Laurence Housman Aldous Huxley C.L.R. James Arthur Koestler John Lehmann Rose Macaulay ''AGAINST FRANCO'' - the shortest contribution Hugh Macdiarmid Louis MacNeice John Middleton Murry Sylvia Pankhurst V.S. Pritchett Herbert Read Olaf Stapledon Sylvia Townsend Warner Clough Williams-Ellis etc etc. In the neutral camp were Vera Brittain Robert Byron T.S. Eliot H.G. Wells V. Sackville-West etc. Only five messages are in the ''Against'' section including ones from Edmund Blunden Arthur Machen and Evelyn Waugh. The following year a similar exercise was carried out in America where 418 writers gave their opinions. Good on lightly-aged paper with thin neat strip of paper mount at head of third page. The sense of humour for which the St John's Wood Clique was known is reflected in the letter which begins: 'Marks Storey and I have just returned from Paris to which dissolute city we went to see the "Salon" and after a hard course of study of pictures frescoes elaborate "menus" at Champeaux and female costume reduced to its simplest form at Offenbach's Theatre - where it chiefly consists of a belt with a few small coins hanging about here we are home again - to Virtue Simplicity and Work!' He is sorry to be late replying: Horsley's friend's drawing is a good one and he has 'many friends better able than myself to advise him'. 'The sending in is to-morrow and so good luck to him - I am sure he thoroughly deserves it.' Calderon writes that he and his colleagues were all very sorry to learn the cause of Horsley's absence from the last meeting: 'it was badly attended - besides yourself - Ward and Leighton were absent - but very interesting as Cope brought forward his motion'. Calderon has 'seriously studied the "lighting" at the Salon' and wants to 'try it in one room here'. He ends by asking: 'Will you back me up' On letterhead of 9 Marlborough Place, St John's Wood, NW.
