Joaquín Romero Maura – died lin June 2022 at the age of 81 at a senior home in Zaragoza Spain. The historian – who held a PhD from Oxford University – was widowed and childless. Very good. - Two typed paragraphs filling most of a sheet of his 5-1/2 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide personalized letterhead with his name printed at top left. Signed "Waldo". The top left corner of the letter is lightly creased with several pinholes where it has been stapled. Folded twice for mailing. Together with a carbon copy of Rugg's reply. Very good. <p>Frank writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teacher's College asking if he can use his name as a reference in applying for a Guggenheim Fellowship. ".My next book I plan and hope will be the one I have always wanted to write and you have always urged me to write: the basic one on The Person - "The Rediscovery of Man." But I shall definitely not be able to afford to do it unless I get some sort of subsidy; wherefore I am applying to the Guggenheim people. May I include you as one of my References together with R. Niebuhr Maritain Lewis Mumford and Alvin Johnson." Frank's book "The Rediscovery of Man: A Memoir and Methodology of Modern Life" was published in New York in 1958.<p>Having been reproached by Frank for being "a bad letter-writer" Rugg replies on October 30 apologizing profusely for having failed to write sooner: "Again and again I ask for forgiveness for my sins of omission.When your letter came I said instantly 'Of course I shall write by return mail and say use my name with the Guggenheim Foundation.' I so hope that you have sent it in even though you haven't heard fro me."<p>Waldo Frank 1889-1967 was an American novelist historian political activist and literary critic. He wrote extensively for The New Yorker and The New Republic during the 1920s and 1930s. He is best known for his studies of Spanish and Latin American literature and culture and his work is regarded as an intellectual bridge between the two continents.<p>Harold Rugg 1886-1981 was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering he went on to study psychology sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920 he took a job at the Columbia University Teacher's College where he stayed until he retired in 1951. Spanish language edition; a translation or variation of the IWW informational and organizing pamphlet "One Big Union of All the Workers." or "One Big Union of The IWW." etc reference: Miles 4393–4397.<br /> <br /> The single-sheet 4 pp. insert prints the Errata for this work on one side and an illustration of "Father Thomas J. Hagerty's Wheel" which is a circular diagram of the structure of the IWW's industrial union system. <br /> <br /> "Father" Thomas J. Hagerty b. 1862 was a Catholic priest a co-founder of the IWW the author of the IWW's omnipresent "Preamble" text and the creator of this chart "Hagerty's Wheel" see: https://archive.iww.org/history/biography/FatherHaggerty/ and https://archive.iww.org/about/official/wheel/. Shortly after the establishment of the IWW in 1905 Hagerty left both the Catholic church and the radical political movement. Exterior shows some spotting and toning with the worst issue is some tears around the spine edges. The top has a tear of about an inch the bottom has a larger tear along the spine edge that measures about 3 inches on the front cover with a smaller tear on the back. The string held binding is still intact in the pages are clean with the exception of some light foxing. There are no signatures or bookplates no handwriting no library markings none of the interior text pages have tears. This is a very rare government publication in the only date present is on the last page which states October 1879. <br/> <br/> Government Printing Office paperback
