Eleanor Hull was a devout laywoman lady-in-waiting to the second wife of Henry IV who spent some of her life in Sopwell Priory a house of Benedictine nuns attached to St. Albans Abbey. She is the first woman to have made translations into English whose name is known and about whom there is any information. In addition to the commentary on the penitential psalms she translated a collection of prayers and meditations. Quando ci raccontano l'etimologia di una parola proviamo spesso una sensazione di meraviglia, perché riconosciamo qualcosa che non sapevamo di sapere, un universo di elementi che era sotto i nostri occhi ma che non avevamo mai notato. Allora come è possibile che l'etimologia, così carica di fascino, non riceva la considerazione che merita? Eppure padroneggiare le parole nella loro storicità e non possederne solamente la scorza ha dei vantaggi. Per esempio, chi acquisisce una 'forma mentis' etimologica sa che attribuire a qualsiasi vocabolo un solo significato è limitativo. Da questo punto di vista l'etimologia è come la poesia, perché sa offrire sempre un'immagine o un gesto che danno tridimensionalità alla parola. Inoltre, quando ne conosciamo l'archeologia, possiamo chiederci se l'uso odierno dei vocaboli conservi ancora qualcosa del significato originale e, nel caso non sia così, indagarne le ragioni. Attraverso dieci appassionanti scavi etimologici, Balzano ci dice non solo che ogni parola ha un corpo da rispettare, ma anche che non è un contenitore da riempire a piacimento. Perché ogni parola ha una sua indipendenza e una sua vita.
