Manuscript table of contents on recto of first leaf describes nine tales in German told by Ascher Horowitz and T. Holpern on first 51 pp: 'Jewish Tales from Jerusalem 1 Dear Aschmadai 2 Reb Itzchak Alchonon der Heilige 3 Ein Brief zu Gott 4 Die Hyaene 5 Die Hungersnoth in Jerusalem 6 Der Reich Mann mit seinen Soehnen 7 Der Mann der neimals sorgte 8 Der Edelmann Ahron beim Graefen von Polen 9 Wie ein Rabbiner seine Tochter verheiratete.' These are followed by 'King Artus' in English apparently transcribed from 'Magazin ed. Berliner XII 1885 Hebrew p. I-II'. The 8vo leaf carries a manuscript page of translation into English. For the mediaeval tale 'King Artus' the only known copy of which is in the Vatican Library see Curt Leviant 'King Artus: A Hebrew Arthurian Romance of 1279' Syracuse University Press 2003. The appendices include a dictionary and an explanation of the Massoretic notes. Printed at Francke's famed Orphan House Press. The Pietist August Hermann Francke 1663-1727 was a German Lutheran Pietist clergyman philanthropist and Biblical scholar. He ranks high also in the history of education owing to the establishment 1695 of his orphan asylum around wh ich he grouped various institutions suited to the needs of teachers and pupils. He also turned his attention to foreign missions; the Pietists promoted the dissemination of the Bible through the establishment 1710 by Freiherr von Canstein of a bible house at the Halle orphan asylum where the orphans were taught the important trades of printing and binding. Collection of Tim Lutz.</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>The Proops family were a notable dynasty of Hebrew printers publishers and booksellers in Amsterdam. Solomon ben Yosef d. 1734 likely son of a printer began as a bookseller and in 1704 founded a Hebrew press producing liturgical works as well as texts on halakhah Kabbalah ethics and history. From 1715 his books carried advertisements and in 1730 he issued the first Hebrew sales catalogue.</p><p>After his death guardians and later his sons continued the press using his name until 1751. In 1785 Joseph Proops sold most stock to Kurzbeck of Vienna; his widow and sons printed on a smaller scale until 1812. Solomon ben Abraham Proops his grandson split in 1797 and worked independently until 1827.</p> Proops family of printers hardcover
