"Whatever place its author may ultimately occupy in future histories of England, one thing is certain, that in the history of the Jewish people the name of Balfour will enjoy unchallenged immortality, evoking comparison with that of Cyrus, for the issue of the Balfour Declaration marked the opening of a new epoch in the annals of Jewry which will be recognised as such even in the remotest centuries to come. In this little book have been gathered together all the utterances of Lord Balfour on the interpretation and implications of his Declaration, on its political aspects and its practical realisation, made during the last ten years." - Preface. (FT) 8vo. Xxx, 201 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Fiction. SERIES: Sifre mofet le-vate midrash. Berdichevsky (1865-1921) , also know as Ben-Gorion, was born in Podalia, to a long line of rabbis. In his teens, he read the Haskalah writers, and this conflict between modernism and tradition informed his entire literary career. It also caused deep disagreements with teachers and family members. He began to be published in 1888, writing both fiction and non-fiction. In 1890, he moved to Russia, and was acquainted with David Frischmann; in 1892 he moved to Germany. In Berlin, he solidified a philosophy of personal and intellectual freedom in the face of "stultifying" tradition. His writing attacked any already-established position, including the Haskalah and Zionism, and demanded an expansion of the Jewish literary canon. Though a later trip back to Russia, and witnessing the realities of Jewish life there, slightly moderated his polemics, Berdichevsky wrote much of the same, though he also branched out to collections of legends and Jewish history. It is of no surprise that his readers were divided along generational lines; the younger readers flocked to his work, while older critics rejected his ideas. (Almagor, EJ) Ex library. (FT) 8vo. 452 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Poetry, Hebrew. "Bavli, who was born in Pilvishki, Lithuania, attended yeshivot in Kovno and Vilna. In 1912 he immigrated to the United States and studied at Canisius College and Columbia University. From 1918 he taught modern Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, after 1937 with the rank of professor. Bavli's first poems appeared in a children's periodical, Ha-Perahim, in 1908. His first book of poetry, Neginot Arez, was published in 1929. Subsequent collections of his poetry, Shirim, Shirim le-Rahelah, and Adderet ha-Shanim, also appeared in Israel. Conservative in style and structure, Bavli covers a broad range of themes in his work: personal love; love of his people; love of Erez Israel. He was one of the first Hebrew poets to deal with the American milieu. Bavli's critical essays Ruhot Nifgashot deal mainly with Hebrew and American writers. Bavli translated Dickens' Oliver Twist and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra into Hebrew. He also translated works by the black writers James D. Corrothers, W. Burghardt du Bois, and Claude McKay into Hebrew" (EJ, 2007) Gift inscription on front endpaper, spine tanned with tear at top, hinges starting, good condition. (HebLit-6-5)
(FT) 16mo. 45 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Hebrew poetry. SERIES: Sifriyah `Ammamit; [no. 12]. OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Born in Vilna, Lebensohn (1828-1852) was a Haskalah poet. His father was the poet Abraham Dov Lebensohn, and Micah had the benefit of a secular education as well as a religious one. At an early age he began his literary career with translations, including Schiller's German Aeneid, which established his reputation. Stricken at 17 with tuberculosis, which would kill him a few years later, he tried spa treatments, and produced some of his best work - influenced by the Romantics and reflective of the poet's knowledge of his oncoming death - while resting in places such as the Reinerz spa. His father published collections of Lebensohn's poems posthumously. (EJ, 2007) Tape label on spine, covers a bit darkened, good condition. (HebLit-6-16)
8vo. 306 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT (S) : Hebrew poetry. "[Zeitlin] grew up in Gomel, Vilna, and Warsaw. His early poetic works were lyrical; later, philosophic concepts appeared in his verses, and then followed an attempt to express mystical religious insights within formal rhythmic structures. A philosophic aesthete deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and mysticism, Zeitlin's lyrics are often contemplative liturgic hymns. Well versed in world literature, Zeitlin wrote with equal facility in Hebrew and Yiddish. [In 1926] he became literary editor of the Warsaw Yiddish daily Unzer Ekspres. When [WWII] came, he was saved; in the spring of 1939, Maurice Schwartz invited him to New York for the Yiddish Art Theater's premiere of his play. The war prevented Zeitlin's return to his family, all of whom were killed by the Nazis. As contributor to the New York Yiddish daily Jewish Morning Journal and professor of Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Zeitlin profoundly influenced the American Jewish scene after World War II. His Hebrew essays, poems, and lectures during his frequent visits to Israel similarly influenced Hebrew literature. " (EJ, 2007) Has tanned and rubbed dust jacket. Front hinge starting, jacket is taped on, good condition. (HebLit-6-18)
