RARE comprehensive monograph on the development of the differing forms employed in various literary movements in modern Arabic poetry, written by Shmuel Moreh (1932-2017), formerly professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In addition to having written many books and articles dealing with Arabic literature in general and Iraqi Jewish Arabic literature in particular, he has been a major contributor to Elaph, the first online daily independent journal in the Arabic language, and a recipient of the Israel Prize in Middle Eastern studies in 1999. The play, which dramatizes the rivalry between David and Saul, won great popularity among the Jewish public in the 19th century, and was printed in several editions, in the original Hebrew and in Yiddish translation, in Eastern and Central Europe. Born in Bialystok, he was ordained as a rabbi in 1903. After teaching for several years, he immigrated to the United States in 1913. There he wrote for the Hebrew and Yiddish press and edited the Hebrew weekly Ha-Ivri. He founded and edited the New York Hebrew daily Hadoar, which was the only modern Hebrew daily to appear in the U. S. When the newspaper was taken over by the Histadrut Ivrit and turned into a weekly, Lipson served for a period as editor. He immigrated to Erez Israel in 1930 and edited the religious daily Ha-Zofeh from its inception, in 1937, until 1944. For more than a generation he collected Jewish folklore which appeared in Mi-Dor-Dor, Anshei Middot, Midrash Zuta, and Emshol Lekha Mashal.
