1976045569Athens: Ekdoseis Kedros 1976 Book. Very Good. French Wraps. 2nd Edition. <<< He chamene anoixe 'The Lost Spring' published in 1976 and set in Athens was intended to be the first part of a new trilogy which Tsirkas never completed. Its hero is a left-wing refugee returning to the city after the tumultuous events of 1965 and it is fascinating to consider how Tsirkas would have developed the theme - and indeed had he lived how he would have described the collapse of the Greek economy in the next century. 258p. Neat tight text some pages uncut/untrimmed./ Paper wraps slightly stained and scuffed. Ekdoseis Kedros paperback
1928055980Constantinople Istanbul: Typescript - Apoyevmatini 1928. No Binding. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original typescript letter with autograph signature and a commercial seal. 27 x 21 cm. In French. 16 lines. A rare and historically interesting typescript letter signed by Vasileiadis editor of the Greek-language minority newspaper Apoyevmatini published in Istanbul addressed to the Electric Company. In this letter Vasileiadis voices a formal complaint regarding the discriminatory exclusion of Apoyevmatini from a discounted electricity rate campaign extended to other members of the press highlighting the unequal treatment of minority publications despite their longstanding contributions to the city's journalistic and cultural landscape. Apoyevmatini was originally founded through a partnership between Konstantinos Vasileiadis who held the publishing license and Odysseas Krystalidis the owner of the printing facilities and an experienced figure in newspaper distribution. The first editor-in-chief Kavalieros Markouizos served until 1927. He introduced the newspaper's enduring motto a quote from Victor Hugo: "New epochs bring new missions." This phrase aptly captured the spirit of the era reflecting the profound transition faced by the Greek community in the wake of the Ottoman Empire's dissolution and the rise of the newly established Republic of Turkey. In 1927 Grigorios Giaveridis succeeded Markouizos as editor-in-chief a position he held until his death on 1 August 1979.

Typescript - Apoyevmatini unknown

22055No date or place. 1p 4to. In good condition with slight creasing to extremities on a leaf of 'Onion Skin' paper. A sixteen line poem in three stanzas beneath which is written boldly and in pencil: 'W B. Stanford Trinity College Dublin'. The poem is one of Stanford's best and best-known and features in Donagh MacDonagh's 'Poems from Ireland' 1944 and Brendan Kennelly's 'Penguin Book of Irish Verse' 1970. The present version exhibits no variations from the text printed by Kennelly. The first stanza reads: 'When the landfolk of Galway converse with a stranger softly the men speak more softly the women light words on their lips and an accent that sings in traditional cadences once plucked by harpists to cheer melancholic carousals of kings when the landfolk of Galway converse with a stranger.' 2480425 August 1891; Grandholme Aberdeen. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with spike hole to one corner. Folded once. From the context the recipient is clearly James S. Cotton editor of the Academy. He explains that ‘Mr S. Reinach’ the French archaeologist Salomon Reinach 1858-1932 recently wrote to him to say that he would send him ‘a copy of his book Chroniques d’Orient if I would review it. I said I would with pleasure review it somewhere. Yesterday the book reached me addressed to me probably owing to some mistake of the publishers as “redacteur de l’Academyâ€â€™. If the editor has not received another copy Paton will either forward the copy he has received ‘or if you will permit me retain it and write a notice of the book for the Academy.’ 25 August 1891; Grandholme, Aberdeen. unknown

1979508629Institute for the History of Arabic Science 1979. Paperback. VERY GOOD. Critical text of Pseudo-Apollonios in Arabic with German introduction. 702pp. 4to sewn binding in publisher's printed wraps. Hinges reinforced with scotch tape tips a bit worn sound and unmarked otherwise. Quite a scarce volume. 'Here for the first time in the history of orientalist scholarship is a complete critical edition of the Kitäb sirr al-khaliqa The Book of the Secret of Creation in its Arabic text; it is also titled Kitab al-'ilal The Book of the Causes. A separate study of the tradition of the text together with a German abstract is planned to be published in the series Ars Medica. Together with the Tabula Smaragdina which originally had its place at the end of this treatise the Kitäb sirr al-khaliqa was one of the best known and most influential treatises in Arabic and Latin medieval alchemy and cosmology. Long ago this book was correctly identified as a spurious work of Apollonius of Tyana. No Greek predecessor is known and the Arabic text in the present form was probably composed around the time of the caliph Ma'mun A.D. 813-833. In many respects the Kitab sirr al-khaliqa resembles the Book of Treasures by Job of Edessa: like it the Kitäb sirr al-khaliga sheds a good deal of light on the broad spectrum of often rather crude explanations of the natural phenomena human physiology and pyschology and philosophical problems that provide the fertile soil for the growing scientific movement in the Islamic culture of the early ninth century. More specifically this Arabic text is of enormous interest for the study of the development of a scientific terminology in that language. The edition is mainly based on four manuscripts representing the most archaic recension and chosen from among seventeen that were examined out of some forty known to be extant. Even the critical edition of the Latin version prepared by M. T. D'Alverny and F. Hudry was consulted in a first draft. When we further consider that the editor had to write the 702-page Arabic text with all the variants diligently by hand the reader cannot fail to feel grateful for an amazingly well-executed contribution to the carly history of Arabic science.' Anton Heinen Review in History of Science Society. Institute for the History of Arabic Science paperback
