A remarkable collection of touching personal letters written by Joseph Grego aged 19–24 to his younger brother Hubert Charles Grego aged 11–16 during his school years—believed to be at Cumberland House a boys' boarding school run by James Mallinson. The volume includes 300 charming illustrations / cartoons integrated throughout the text along with four tipped in. Several letters to their mother and additional correspondence sent from abroad are also present.14.5 x 21.5 cm full green leather with triple gilt line borders to the front and rer and titles and decoration to the spine. The binding has a little rubbing to the spine tips corners and joints. Internally clean with just a little browning and curling to the edges of some letters. The writer Joseph Grego began his career at Lloyds before moving into the world of art as a collector journalist and respected authority on Gillray Rowlandson Morland and Cruikshank. Amongst his publications he was instrumental in the 1873 edition of James Gillray's Works and edited Rowlandson the Caricaturist 2 vols. 1880. Although he gathered extensive material for a biography of Morland it remained unfinished.A skilled draughtsman Grego designed theatrical costumes etched the work of others and developed a method of reproducing eighteenth century colour prints so accurate they were often mistaken for originals. He served as a director of Carl Hentschel Ltd. and Kegan Paul & Co. and was associated with the Graphic Company. In 1897 he contributed to the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court where his Dickens collection was described as "the fullest collection of Dickensiana ever gathered into one focus." His vast holdings were dispersed after his death via sales at Christie's and Puttick and Simpson's. Included with the book are letters from 1978-79 between Mrs Bruce-Johnston and the Folio Society regarding her submission of the volume for potential publication. All in all a fabulous set of family letters elevated by some excellent often humorous illustrations. Hubert Grego died in 1889 and Joseph in 1908 both unmarried. Their sister Louisa "Louie" from 1901 onward inherited Joseph's estate. She married George Bruce Johnston in 1902 and their son Roy Grego Bruce Johnston was born in 1905. Roy married Margaret Evelyn Palmer "Evelyn" in 1929. Included with the book are letters from 1978–79 between Mrs. Bruce Johnston and the Folio Society regarding her submission of the volume for potential publication. An original aquatint printed in terracotta-red and black over a white background. This plate XL of volume II is one of the finest plates of the collection. It represents two juxtaposed black-glazed vases a terracotta-figured warrior is seen on the left vase while a terracotta-figured griffon in an ornate border is seen on the vase to the right. The plate is numbered and each vase is captioned. Printed on a folio captioned sheet measuring 22.5" x 16.5" the two vases are each over 9" tall. Now presented in cream mounting boards 26" x 22" glazed behind clear mylar. A fine and beautifully preserved plate in excellent condition. ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PLATES OF THE COLLECTION this plates features two full views of vases providing a sense of depth and grace far deeper then the typically flat images associated with this famous work. This plate is from the original edition of LaBorde's COLLECTION DES VASES GRECS DE MR. LE COMTE DE LAMBERG. The Count of Lamberg Ambassador to the King of Naples assembled a remarkable collection of approximately 500 vases which included a number given to him by the Queen of Naples. Laborde mindful of faults in the illustrations of the famous Hamilton catalogues was intent on producing an even finer book and rendering the objects with 'extreme fidelity'. Brunet said of the production "the precious pieces in this collection are shown here with remarkable precision." Quérard noted "this work deserves particular attention for its fine execution. It was attempted as much as possible to present facsimiles so to speak of the vases with all the colours and figures that can be seen on these precious pieces. Volume I Part I: Prehistoric Aegean Pottery by E.J. Forsdyke 1925; xliv 228 pages with numerous illustrations plus 16 plates. Volume I Part II: Cypriote Italian and Etruscan Pottery by H.B. Walters 1912; xxxii 276 pages with numerous illustrations plus 34 plates. Volume II: Black-figured Vases by H.B. Walters 1893; iv 314 pages with '40 illustrations in text' plus 7 plates. Volume III: Vases of the Finest Period by Cecil H. Smith 1896; vi 426 pages with '28 illustrations in text' plus 28 plates. Volume IV: Vases of the Latest Period by H.B. Walters 1896; vi 276 pages with '30 illustrations in text' plus 16 plates. The out-of-sequence dates of publication of the two parts of the first volume are explained in the respective prefaces. The one in Part II 1912 notes that 'When the present Catalogue . was planned in 1891 Volume I was assigned to the vases then exhibited in the First Vase Room which are for the most part of an early date and represent the beginnings of Greek Vase-painting in many places and styles. The subsequent growth of the collection especially in the sections dealing with Crete and Cyprus has made it necessary to divide the volume into two parts the second of which is the first to be ready for issue'. The preface in Part I 1925 adds that 'The lapse of time consequent on the interruption of the War and the further growth of the collection have caused an additional sub-division. The Second Part of Vol. I is devoted to the special groups of Cypriote Early Italian and Etruscan Vases. The Third Part when it appears will deal with the Geometric Early Corinthian and Ionian wares intermediate between the prehistoric pottery of Part I and the black figure vases which are the subject of Vol. II'. Spine elaborately gilt-tooled now heavily worn overall and at the ends. Top edges gilt. In volume 1 the first leaf of the preface is loose showing significant creases and minor tears to the margins. In volume 2 the gathering comprising pp. vii-xii is loose but present and strong. Otherwise although the text blocks are cracked in some places the sewing and cloth joints are holding secure. The leaves themselves are strong and bright overall with some faint scattered foxing. Remains a very serviceable set overall.
