But because these marshals labored in his shadow, their careers and contributions to Alexander's success have been neglected by historians, ancient and modern. The primary aim of this book is to bring them to light. Waldemar Heckel presents an interpretative prosopographical study of more than 130 officers who served Alexander the Great. As such, The Marshals of Alexander's Empire is a revision, a continuation and an expansion of H. Berve's Das Alexanderreich aup prosopographischer Grunlage, volume 2 (Munich, 1926). The Marshals of Alexander's Empire provides the first full discussion in English of the careers of Alexander's Macedonian officers and closest friends. ; 1.2 x 9.3 x 6.1 Inches; 444 pages

Notes in ink and pencil by G. P. Goold (? ) to some pages. Light bumping to a couple of corners. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments, substantial extracts from the works which quote them and, where necessary, a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts (particularly those of Ennius) in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way, it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists.

Very light edgewear to bottom corners. ; Volume 2 Only. ; Vol. 2; 974 pages; The Cambridge History of Classical Literature provides a comprehensive, critical survey of the literature of Greece and Rome from Homer till the Fall of Rome. This is the only modern work of this scope; it embodies the very considerable advances made by recent classical scholarship, and reflects too the increasing sophistication and vigour of critical work on ancient literature. The literature is presented throughout in the context of the culture and the social and hisotircal processes of which it is an integral part. The overall aim is to offer an authoritative work of reference and appraisal for one of the world's greatest continuous literary traditions. The work is divided into two volumes, each with a similar and broadly chronological structure. Among the special features are important introductory chapters by the General Editors on 'Books and Readers', discussing the conditions under which literature was written and read in antiquity. There are also extensive Appendices or Authors and Works giving detailed factual information in a convenient form. Technical annotation is otherwise kept to a minimum, and all quotations in foreign languages are translated.

2 Bände. Frontispiz, 7 Abb. , 3 Ktn. ; 2 Volume Set COMPLETE; 1072 pages; English description: This two-volume compilation of works by ancient historian Adolf Lehmann presents a representative selection of his short essays. Gift inscription from author to 'Michael' on ffep. Very light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; A. J. Littlewood approaches Seneca's tragedies as Neronian literature rather than as reworkings of Attic drama, and emphasizes their place in the Roman world and in the Latin literary corpus. The Greek tragic myths are for Seneca mediated by non-dramatic Augustan literature. In literary terms Phaedra's desire, Hippolytus' innocence, and Hercules' ambivalent heroism look back through allusion to Roman elegy, pastoral, and epic respectively. Ethically, the artificiality of Senecan tragedy, the consciousness that its own dramatic worlds, events, and people are literary constructs, responds to the contemporary Stoical dismissal of the public world as mere theatre. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 344 pages; Signed by Author

Faint dust-soiling/foxing to top of textblock else fine. Dustjacket has minor edgewear and rubbing. ; The essays in this volume present new insights into the far-reaching influence of an early oral culture on subsequent development after the spread of literacy. At the outset, revisionist essays on the Homeric epics examine such questions as historical memory, Homer's audience (s) , descriptive strategies, ring-composition, and the status of orality as a constitutive feature of the epics. These are followed by virtually unprecedented studies of the orality of later (written) literature, including Greek oratory, Virgilian epic, Pliny's Panegyricus and story-telling in late Greek writers. Included as well are two discussions of Athenian vase-painting: annular scene-composition in the black-figure tradition, and the implications of kalos-inscriptions. An introduction by leading oral theorist John Miles Foley situates all the essays at the leading edge of oral theoretical development. ; Mnemosyne. Bibliotheca Classica Batava.
