It throws new light on an important period in ancient history. In particular, Dr Grainger concentrates on the relationship between the kings and the cities in their kingdoms and reveals that former theories concerning such a relationship require drastic revision. Most importantly the relationship is shown to have been much more to the kings' advantage than previous discussions on Hellenistic states have supposed. He argues in fact that neither the kings nor the cities intended the cities to be autonomous or independent since they were far too reliant on royal support against the enmity of the surrounding population. Evidence for this can be seen in the actions of the cities on the collapse of the Seleukid dynasty in the first century BC; then they were forced to cast about for a new protector and eventually accepted Rome albeit reluctantly. Dr Grainger discusses the differing fate of the cities during this process when some failed altogether, most declined, and only one, Antioch, prospered.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (34 x 24 cm). In English. 437 p., color and b/w ills. The treasures of Troia. Translated by Jean D. Carpenter Efe. Edited by Arzu Kahramani Pekin. It has been some 140 years now that actual finds from the ancient city of Troy-that city near the Dardanelles-that Troia around which was spun the famed epic of Homer's Illiad-appeared to accompany and magnify the myth. The finds unearthed there-many representing buried treasures-are today widely scattered, with principal groups, however, now found housed in only (!) eight different museums. The goal of this work is to bring the individual pieces together, to verify their common origin, to consider their purpose, and to place them into an accurate chronological perspective-not only within the strata of the site itself, but throughout the Bronze Age world that helped create them. These objects demonstrate how developed the aesthetic sensibilities of our ancestors living some 4500 years ago really were, and how highly developed the craft of their goldsmiths was at the time. Geographical patterns of influence as well as the import of semiprecious stones and other raw materials stress the far-reaching trade and significance of the Trojans.
Very faint foxing to top of textblock else book is fine. Dustjacket is protected in plastic sleeve. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.3 x 8.7 x 5.6 Inches; 360 pages; Madness plays a vital role in many ancient epics: not only do characters go mad, but madness also often occupies a central thematic position in the texts. In this book, Debra Hershkowitz examines from a variety of theoretical angles the representation and poetic function of madness in Greek and Latin epic from Homer through the Flavians, including individual chapters devoted to the Iliad and Odyssey, Virgil's Aeneid, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Lucan's Bellum Civile, and Statius' Thebaid. The study also addresses the difficulty of defining madness, and discusses how each epic explores this problem in a different way, finding its own unique way of conceptualizing madness. Epic madness interacts with ancient models of madness, but also, even more importantly, with previous representations of madness in the literary tradition. Likewise, the reader's response to epic madness is influenced by both ancient and modern views of madness, as well as by an awareness of intertextuality.

Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Author's Gift inscription on ffep. ; 230 pages; Plato's Crito examines a single moral decision, whether Socrates ought to escape from his death-cell. Stokes's book discusses Socrates' arguments against Crito's offer of escape. It construes Socrates' questions as genuine questions, which clarify and undermine Critos positions. Stokes's approach avoids the "documentary fallacy"; it shows how Plato catered for both the novice and the experienced reader of his published works. This book offers a fresh account of Socrates' whole strategy. It demonstrates both the shakiness of Socrates' persuasion of the un-philosophical Crito to engage in dialectic, and the coherence of his substantive confutation. Plato's reasoning emerges from Stokes's study with more credit than many have given it.; Signed by Author
