Illustrated with tissue-guarded lithographic frontis to Volume I and "about four hundred" drawings. Smooth blue half cal ruled in gilt over rmaroon/blue marbled boards. Gilt title to red panel on spine. Five raised bands with gilt decorated spine panels. Marbled edges. Rubbing to edges and gutters. Corners worn with a small loss of leather to bottom front corner of Volume I. Matching marbled endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedowns and handwritten and dated name to front flyleaves. Title page of Volume I detached but present. Bright interior. Spine and hinges tight. Thomas Rowlandson 1757 - April 1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker Rowlandson produced both individual social and political satires as well as a large number of illustrations for novels humorous books and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of his age such as James Gillray his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. <br /> <br /> Author Joseph Grego 1843 - 1908 was an art collector and exhibitor journalist inventor and graphics expert. Slight darkening to edges of boards and some rubbing cracking to second vol. front hinge light toning to pages. No owners' names. Grego specialised as a writer and collector in the works of James Gillray Thomas Rowlandson George Morland Charles Dickens and George Cruikshank and was an acknowledged authority on all of them. This is the standard reference work on Rowlandson. A clean set illustrated with ornate gilt spines. First vol VG second vol G to VG. Good copies only both in the original red leather-backed red cloth boards slightly dust-toned overall and heavily rubbed at the edges with some surface loss. Spine elaborately gilt-tooled now heavily worn overall and at the ends. Top edges gilt. In volume 1 the first leaf of the preface is loose showing significant creases and minor tears to the margins. In volume 2 the gathering comprising pp. vii-xii is loose but present and strong. Otherwise although the text blocks are cracked in some places the sewing and cloth joints are holding secure. The leaves themselves are strong and bright overall with some faint scattered foxing. Remains a very serviceable set overall.
