The Ottoman State had to leave the administration of Cyprus to the United Kingdom through the Treaty in 1878. Thus, the island of Cyprus was administered by the United Kingdom from 1878 until 1960. There were some regulations in every area, including education, on the island during the United Kingdom period. One of these regulations was the opening of new schools on the island. One of these schools was Victoria Girls' School, where girls on the island received education. After the establishment of the Lycee of Cyprus on the island in 1897, the Victoria Girls' School was opened in 1901. The British administration and the Turkish Cypriot philanthropists have come together to cover the construction costs of the Victorian school. In addition, the British colonial administration requested that the name of the school be Victorian in return for the assistance it made for the construction of the school. The school, which started its educational activities in 1902 despite its establishment in 1901, played an important role in the development of contemporary Turkish Cypriot women. Moreover, it can be said that the school had important impacts on the political, cultural and social life of the island. Meanwhile, the school played an important role in the adoption of the Ataturk's Revolutions in Cyprus. Thus, during and after the United Kingdom period, the Victorian Girls' School has become one of the most well-established schools of the island where the Turkish Cypriot girls were educated. In the research, it was explained in chronological order how this educational institution was established and through which phases it passed.

"What is Sappho, except a name? Although the Greek archaic lyrics attributed to Sappho of Lesbos survive only in fragments, she has been invoked for many centuries as the original woman poet, singing at the origins of a Western lyric tradition. Victorian Sappho traces the emergence of this idealized feminine figure through reconstructions of the Sapphic fragments in late-nineteenth-century England. Yopie Prins argues that the Victorian period is a critical turning point in the history of Sappho's reception; what we now call "Sappho" is in many ways an artifact of Victorian poetics. Prins reads the Sapphic fragments in Greek alongside various English translations and imitations, considering a wide range of Victorian poets--male and female, famous and forgotten--who signed their poetry in the name of Sappho. By "declining" the name in each chapter, the book presents a theoretical argument about the Sapphic signature, as well as a historical account of its implications in Victorian England." xiii, 279p.illus. bibliography, index. Light shelfwear. Light foxing to top of textblock. ; This book probes the narratives of poets who are exiled, tried or executed for their satire. Aesop, fabulist and riddle warrior, is assimilated to the pharmakos--the wretched human scapegoat who is expelled from the city or killed in response to a crisis--after satirizing the Delphians. In much the same way, Dumezil's Indo-European heroes, Starkathr and Suibhne, are both warrior-poets persecuted by patron deities. This book views the scapegoat as a group's dominant warrior, sent out to confront predators or besieging forces. Both poets and warriors specialize in madness and aggression, are necessary to society, yet dangerous to society. ; Hellenic Studies 11; 432 pages
British Archaeological Reports BAR International Series 933; 269 pages; Monica Rorison's thesis identifies and examines the vici of Aquitania, Lugdunensus and Belgia, dating from Caesar's victory at Alesia in 52 BC through to the Roman withdrawal in the early 5th century. The study combines a catologue of sites, arranged geographically, with an overview of the definition, origins, development, structure and function of the settlements.
