I due saggi contenuti ne "Il compito degli ebrei" che, pubblicati a Parigi in quello stesso fatidico 1933, vengono proposti ora al lettore italiano si inseriscono perfettamente nella medesima tradizione di pensiero rivelandosi nel contempo assai stimolanti e stilisticamente pregevoli. Ciò vale per il contributo di Feuchtwanger, secondo il quale il nazionalismo ebraico, in quanto fenomeno cosmopolita ed esclusivamente culturale, sarà in grado di arricchire in misura determinante un mondo ormai senza frontiere, come per il breve saggio di Zweig, il quale prende in esame l'insopprimibile volontà di esprimersi che aveva contraddistinto l'attività di tanti artisti provenienti dalle comunità ebraiche dell'Europa orientale e i risultati prodotti nei diversi ambiti artistici.

E poi trovare il modo di procurarsi quello che più gli manca: un po'di carne da mettere sotto i denti. Ma non dovrà sforzarsi troppo, giacché a offrirgli, con entusiastica e spontanea generosità, tutto ciò di cui ha bisogno saranno le donne, nessuna delle quali sembra poter resistere al suo fascino. Se "Epepe" si presentava da subito come un incubo, "Tempi felici" appare sin dalle prime battute come un divertissement - quasi uno schnitzleriano girotondo. Solo in una commedia, infatti, farsi crescere un paio di baffi può sottrarre un giovane ebreo alle terribili Croci frecciate nell'Ungheria dell'inverno del 1945; e solo in una commedia il giovanotto in questione può vivere le sei drammatiche settimane dell'assedio dei Sovietici, in una città squassata dai bombardamenti e ridotta allo stremo, come una parentesi beata, deliziosamente propizia agli amori clandestini, riuscendo a farsi proteggere, nutrire e coccolare da prostitute e borghesi, da giovani e da vecchie - e perfino da una miliziana fascista. After the war and back in Prague she and her husband joined the Communist Party. In doing so, they believed that socialism offered a genuine alternative to the injustice, racism and war of capitalism. Yet under the Soviet Stalinist version of socialism; their idealism was gradually undermined. Her husband was tried and executed in a party purge. The Prague Sping of 1968 gave her a brief hope that a genuine Democratic Socialist society might be possible. This hope was extinguished by the intervention of Soviet armed forces. This then is a remarkable work of hope in the face of horror and defeat. The book itself is in a good overall condition. It is aformer library copy. It therefore comes with the normal marks one would expect. DJ very good. Spine and covers all excellent.
