RARE monograph on the nature and pace of grammatical change during the formative period of today's Indo-Aryan languages, with emphasis on the emergence and development of the ergative construction in terms of the passive-to-ergative reanalysis and the co-existence of the ergative construction with the old and new analytic passive constructions. Based on a wealth of new data gathered from original poetic works in Apabhramsa (by Svayaṃbhadeva, Puspadanta, Haribhadra, Somaprabha et al.), it also contains sections dealing with descriptive techniques of Medieval Indian grammarians (esp. EXTREMELY RARE alphabetically ordered lexicon of the Accadian prayers in expiation rituals in phonetic (Latin letters) transcription, with English introduction and explanations, a systematic arrangement of the grammatical forms and brief notes on the etymology of the words. Cecil James Mullo Weir (1897-1995) was a Scottish academic and theologian, Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University of Glasgow from 1937 until 1968. 135x190mm. XIX+411 pages. Boards are worn at edges, slightly bowed and bumped at corners, leading edge foot notably so. Spine is cocked, heavily tanned, creased at head and foot, with a small tear present at the base. Page block shows age related discolouration and foxing, this extending to pastedowns and end papers. Stapled, typed comments 'with the Editor's compliments' are laid in. Rust residue present on front pastedown and EP. Internally, light tanning to edges, occasional foxing and gutter break at 112-113, otherwise pages are well bound and clear. CN Used
