Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon was born to a family of conquerors whose history reflected much of the history of Spain. Lost to Spain and the Church since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 New Mexico was believed to contain untold riches and minerals. Vargas was appointed Governor of New Mexico in 1690 and was determined to reconquer the lost territory. How he accomplished this is told here in documents - reports and letters - signed by Vargas himself and by his lieutenants and associates.
