The fourth edition of this vanishingly scarce Japanese phrasebook. In contemporary cloth binding with gilt to the spine. Published in Tangshan this guide provides the English and Japanese translations of many practical and conversational phrases including the pronunciations and kana. Also towards the end of this book there are examples of letters written in Japanese. Credited under "Zheng" to the title page with translation assistance by Shinmiya Dai. In a contemporary cloth binding with gilt to the spine and 'W. Ghume' blind-stamped to the front board. Externally very smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. A couple marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. With age toning and a 1" closed tear to the title page. Paper used has recurring spot-like grain throughout however there is the occasional later spot. Ex libris bookplate of one Cliff Parfit tipped-in to the front free endpaper. Spine has many rips and tears very battered and tanned on the verge of falling completely off. Front and back spine hinges are heavily cracked with rear cloth board on the very of coming un-bound. The binding is in surprisingly good shape for its age with good color dark green and very little wear to the edges. The gold stamping on the spine with a decorative device is slightly faded but still quite handsome. A bookplate places this book as having been in the collection of one Sir Henry Maine. There is a closed tear in the first page blank but otherwise the pages look great with no foxing and only light age-toning. The huge fold-out map is in good shape with one closed tear.
