Député à l'Assemblée législative et à la Convention, c'était un révolutionnaire modéré qui vota contre l'exécution de Louis XVI et qui échappa lui-même à la guillotine. Marat obtint sa grâce en le dépeignant comme un vieux radoteur, incapable d'actes dangereux. Coiffe supérieure usée, bel état cependant d'une grande fraicheur, dans une reliure d'époque.
