Despite the fact that the Strait of Sunda was sailed relatively frequently by European sailors Krusenstern's 1813-memoir is one of the earliest reliable pilots to this strait. From the present memoire: "Although a strait so important as that of Sunda frequented every year by more than 50 European ships ought to be as one would naturally suppose perfectly well known; notwithstanding which after having examined the charts of these coasts reputed the best I venture to say that I have been convinced that there does not exit one with which one can be entirely satisfied". Subtitled: In quo plerasque justi historici dotes desiderari plerosque naevos inesse ostendit Gratianus Lucius Hibernus qui etiam aliquot res memorabiles Hibernicas veteris et vovae memoriae passim e re nata huic operi inseruit. Cambrensis Eversus has been generally esteemed one of the most valuable works on the history of Ireland. Viewed merely as a refutation of Giraldus de Barry it was on some points unsuccessful but its comprehensive plan embracing a great variety of well-digested and accurate information on every period of Irish history makes it a valuable work. Lynch defends the cessation of 1643 the peace of 1646 and 1648 condemns the nuncio and approves the general policy of Ormonde. This volume contain the bookplate of Peter Lanyon-Orgill 1924-2002 a bizarre linguistic charlatan who was responsible for a rather large body of work that he apparently purloined from legitimate linguists over his lengthy career. August Immanuel Bekker 21 May 1785 7 June 1871 was a German philologist and critic. Born in Berlin Bekker completed his classical education at the University of Halle under Friedrich August Wolf who considered him as his most promising pupil. In 1810 he was appointed professor of philosophy in the University of Berlin. For several years between 1810 and 1821 he travelled in France Italy England and parts of Germany examining classical manuscripts and gathering materials for his great editorial labours. Some of the fruits of his researches were published in the Anecdota Graeca 3 vols 18141821 but the major results are to be found in the enormous array of classical authors edited by him. Anything like a complete list of his works would occupy too much space but it may be said that his industry extended to nearly the whole of Greek literature with the exception of the tragedians and lyric poets. His best known editions are those of Plato 18161823 Oratores Attici 18231824 Aristotle 18311836 Aristophanes 1829 and twenty-five volumes of the Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae. The only Latin authors edited by him were Livy 18291830 and Tacitus 1831. Bekker confined himself entirely to manuscript investigations and textual criticism; he contributed little to the extension of other types of scholarship. Bekker numbers have become the standard way of referring to the works of Aristotle and the Corpus Aristotelicum. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1861. He died in Berlin aged 86. Wikipedia hardcover
