194023464Albuquerque NM: University of New Mexico Press 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good-. xi 319 pp including index. Frontis portrait of Governor Vargas. A touch of faint staining on front board light foxing to edges of text block else fine. In the uncommon original dust jacket which is toned at the spine and edges and has some small chips tears and stains but remains generally well preserved. Seven important documents with a scholarly introduction. Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon was born to a family of conquerors whose history reflected much of the history of Spain. Lost to Spain and the Church since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 New Mexico was believed to contain untold riches and minerals. Vargas was appointed Governor of New Mexico in 1690 and was determined to reconquer the lost territory. How he accomplished this is told here in documents - reports and letters - signed by Vargas himself and by his lieutenants and associates. Many of these had never before been published -almost none of them in English translation. Steck: Spanish Borderlands 76. University of New Mexico Press hardcover
