pp. (4), 318. Uncut and unopened. 4to. [310 x 245 mm.] Deckle edged. Foxed. Later half-morocco leather binding. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Reed, in 'Old English Letter Foundries'. Obviously, unopened Baskerville quartos are uncommon and significant. Gaskell 51; Brunet V:87; Grasse VI:242. EXTREMELY RARE. W113.
The second volume (of two?). Thick 8vo. pp. 501-862, (50), 224 + Engraved folding map, and engraved portrait plate. Edges colored brown. **Painted vellum binding and hidden lettered fore-edge** Early full vellum binding, decorated with small, bold pen drawings of ships sailing below a seven line motto in Latin (this text, no longer easily legible). On the rear board is an ink drawing of a Tudor rose. Painted under the brown fore-edge, and visible only when fanned, is the following text: "TULLIUM M. C. JULIUS CAESAR CICERONEM OB E GRECIAS EJUS / DOMITUM SALVUM ET INCOLUMEM / ESSE JOBEMUS C. JA BOIENUS / NOSTRIS ARMIS VIRTUTEQUE". Later manuscript vellum spine label: "INCERTA" (meaning uncertain or doubtful). Was this perhaps a critic's warning about the accuracy of the notes on Caesar that Scaliger gathered together? A UNIQUE AND ENTIRELY REMARKABLE ITEM. CHEST 2/2
364p. Slight foxing. 4to. [304 x 235 mm.] Contemporary straight grained plum morocco leather binding. Boards tooled in gold with a wide Greek key design, and in blind with an archway roll. Engraved bookplate showing a shield (Arms Barry of six Supporters); two unicorns; ermine Coronet of an Earl ; and the Motto A MA PUISSANCE. Drury's Best Wishes, Eton, March 20 , 1820." John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Three works bound in one. 1). pp. [353] Adams 2201; 2). ff. 63, [1]; 3). ff. 155. 24 mo. 120 mm. Attractive contemporary full leather binding over beveled oak boards. Leather worn smooth, though some the old armorial design can be made out. Unusual original twisted metal clasps. Gauphered gilt edges. The first of these works is by St. Augustine (354-430) an early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are 'The City of God'; 'On Christian Doctrine' [included here]; and 'Confessions.' The second title is by St. Vincent of Lerins, who died ca. 445. He was a Gallic monk and author of important early Christian writings. He was probably a proponent of semipelagianism and opposed the Augustine model of grace. The third is by Arnoldus Vesaliensis (Arnold Haldrein), (1484-1534). He was a German Humanist. Here he is joined with Peter Lombard (1096-1160), a scholastic theologian, Bishop of Paris, and author of Four Books of Sentences, which became the standard textbook of theology. Each of these editions are very scarce, and there are only a handful of examples in libraries worldwide. A treasured collection in a wonderful contemporary binding. CHEST 2/1

Brunet, IV/1195. Bibl. Agronomique, n. 1718: "Ouvrage estimé et recherché; assez rare". In-4 °, (20), 360, (60), 328pp, 3 folded tables, frontispiece, plates; good condition, vellum binding, label at the spine. Good edition of this collection, edited by Goes, of Latin authors on the subject of agronomy and land surveying. Partly already published in 1554 by André Turnèbe, it was subsequently Nicolas Rigault (Paris, 1577-1654, literary scholar and latinist, who succeeded Casaubon in the position of royal librarian) who promoted a new edition in Paris in 1614 under the title Auctores finium regundorum ... Both editions were blurred by this 1674. The treatise includes works by Latin writers such as: Siculus Flaccus, De conditionibus agrorum; Julius Frontinus, De coloniis libellus and De agrorum qualitate; Hyginus, De limitibus constituendis; Innocentius, De litteris et notis juris exponendis. The numerous engravings in the text schematically represent rural landscapes with rivers, mountains, houses, castles, woods, sources and symbols used in the plants of the Roman land registers and in the determination of rural funds. Brunet, IV / 1195. Bibl. Agronomique, n. 1718: "Ouvrage estimé et recherché; assiz rare".
