First and only edition of a detailed history of the ancient world, covering and comparing the cultures, religions, governments, (civil and ecclesiastical) legal systems, etc. of societies throughout the Old World. After a brief discussion of the pre-diluvian world, it covers the ancient Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe country by country or region by region, citing both biblical and classical sources. The Cellarius map appears to be based on the 1664 map of the same title by Johannes Strubius (Shirley 434, in the same projection and showing the same regions, but not including Australia), but its more accurate and up-to-date cartographic data appears to have been taken from one of the world maps in two hemispheres that were common from at least 1658 (Visscher's, Shirley 406). As in those maps, the coast of Australia shows a small break at 30 degrees south latitude. Cellarius (1638-1707) had produced a series of historical maps for his Notitia Orbis Antiqui, first published at Leipzig in 1701, and the present map may be based on one from that book. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he became printer to Cambridge University. All of his books show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Corvin avait suivi l'Académie calviniste de Herborn jusqu'à Siegen en 1595. Une ancienne annotation manuscrite en anglais, rédigée en garde et attribuable au rédacteur de l'ex-libris, William R. Williams, relève dans l'avant-dernière page de la préface l'évocation des "Victims of St Barthelemeos Massacres throughout France 22 years before estimated at 60.000". A propos de la page 16 de la seconde partie, il commente : "pointing gunpowder not modern inventions". Concernant la page 61 : "Idle walking condemned in Sparta". A beautiful book of poems that includes 12 original illustrations throughout by Diego Rivera, the painter and founder of Mexican Muralism, who is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Poems are by Yiddish poet Isaac Berliner, accompanied by the Rivera illustrations as well as a portrait of the poet by the artist. Diego Rivera was a friend of Berliner. Isaac Berliner (1899-1957) , a poet from Lodz, immigrated to Mexico in 1922. His poems, some of which deal with political and social issues, influenced many Mexican artists, including Diego Rivera (1886-1957) as well as Rivera's wife, the artist Frida Kahlo.
