Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original fine black quarter leather bdg. Marbled endpaper. Ottoman lettered gilt on spine. 2 volumes in 1. Demy 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 2 volumes set: (303, [7] p; 238, [6] p). Hegira: 1305 = Gregorian: 1888. First and only edition of this extremely rare first separate Roman history (as well as the Byzantine history) in the Ottoman/Turkish literature. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha had already dealt briefly in Roman and Byzantine history as part of an outline of ancient and medieval European history (Avrupa'nin Ahval-i Sabika ve Lahikasi): Tarih-i Cevdet (first edition) vol. 6 (Istanbul 1294 AH /1877). The Roman history until Constantine the Great is limited to the first ten pages of this account, the remainder deals with Byzantine history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, bureaucrat, administrator, historian, and a prominent figure during the Tanzimat reforms of the Ottoman Empire. He was the head of the Mecelle commission that codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the Westernization of law. He is often regarded as a pioneer in the codification of civil law based on the European legal system. The Mecelle remained intact in several modern Arab states in the early and mid-20th century. In addition to Turkish, he was proficient in Arabic, Persian, French, and Bulgarian languages. He wrote numerous books on history, law, grammar, linguistics, logic, and astronomy. Toponyms are Turkish in Latin transcription script as well as their ancient names in Roman and Greek. Including Afiun Karahisar [Afyonkarahisar] and its south and southwest area. Ascanius Lavus, Djemal Bey Tschiftligi, Macropedium, Asi Karaaghatsch, Denizli, Cretopolis, Sozopolis, Isparta, Tabenerum Campus, Hynera (Cydrara), Anaua Lacus (Adji Tuz Gölü), Ishikli Eumenia, Panasium (Banas Ovasi i.e. Plain), etc. It's one of the 24 sheets of 'Karte von Kleinasien'. Rihard Kiepert was a German cartographer born in Weimar. He was the son of famed geographer Heinrich Kiepert. Richard Kiepert studied geography and history in Berlin and Heidelberg. In 1870, he traveled in Palestine and Asia Minor, returning to take part in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1874, he received his doctorate of philosophy at the University of Jena. From 1874 until 1878 he worked on the compilation of Ferdinand von Richthofen's atlas of China, and from 1875 to 1887, he was editor of the geographical periodical Globus. From 1902 until 1908 he worked on the Spezialkarte von Kleinasien, a map of Asia Minor that was created on a 1:400,000 scale. After his father's death in 1899, he continued the work on the elder Kiepert's classic Formae Orbis Antiqui.

Sabahat Senberk was the translator of Titus Livius's corpus of the Roman history and the writer of 'Vergilius'un ekloglarinda insan ve mücadelesi' book. The index of the vocabulary of Bucolica (Vergilius) translation into Turkish which Sabahat Sener had made while she was studying the Latin language at the period of the Republican enlightenment. It's known that so many translations from western and eastern literature into Turkish at this period. A large number of the words written with an enormous alphabetical order.
