First edition.<br /><br />The document reproduced in the following pages is a contemporary copy of the lost Laws of Burgos. This famous code is well worth studying; it was the first comprehensive attempt to regulate relations between Indians and Spaniards and is in effect the adumbration of the policy that was finally codified in the >i>Recopilacion de las leyes de Indias. Its application here is that it contains the relatively complete plan for the reduction of the Indians to villages which is the subject of the second part of this paper. In the transcription here undertaken the spelling and punctuation have been modernized ad some errors of the copyist have been corrected. Where the text of the Preamble has been damaged at the foot of the first folio the lacunae have been supplied from the text as given by Las Casas. A very good copy amply-margined with fine crisp text throughout.<br /> <br /> Important edition of this Aramaic version of the biblical books of Chronicles attributed to Joseph ben Hiyya d. 333 a Babylonian amora and head of the Pumbedita academy near present-day Falluja Iraq. "Ben Hiyya was also distinguished in biblical exegesis and left an Aramaic translation of parts of the Bible which is often quoted. It is not to be assumed however that Joseph translated the whole Bible though the Aramaic translation of the Books of Chronicles is ascribed to him. Enc. Jud. The editio princeps edited from an Erfurt manuscript by Matthias Frederick Beck and accompanied by substantial annotations was published at Augsburg in 1680. "After this David Wilkins gave the public an edition from a Cambridge manuscript of which the text was more pure and more complete. The critic should unite both these editions the former for the value of its learned notes and the latter for its full and accurate text†The Biblical Repertory. <br /> <br /> The Coptic scholar David Wilkens 1685–1745 was born of Prussian parentage in Memel Lithuania. Little is known about his education in Germany probably in Berlin or how he acquired his knowledge of ancient and Semitic languages which was extensive rather than profound. He referred to the antiquarian Ezechiel Spanheim the elector of Brandenburg's ambassador in England from 1701 to 1710 as his former teacher. By 1707 Wilkins was studying at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and had encountered a group of clerical protectors in London. In 1709 engaged in preparing a history of the patriarchs of Alexandria which remained in manuscript and the editio princeps of the Coptic Bohairic New Testament the Novum Testamentum Aegyptium 1716 he left for the continent. He called on scholars examined manuscripts in Vienna Rome and Paris and stopped in Amsterdam in 1714 to see to the publication of his first works -- an edition of the Aramaic paraphrasis of the books of Chronicles and an Armenian version of the apocryphal third epistle to the Corinthians 1715 -- and of John Chamberlayne's polyglot edition of the Lord's prayer to which he contributed. Wilkins was an industrious scholar. In the three years he spent as librarian at Lambeth he made important contributions to the cataloguing of manuscripts. In 1721 he edited the Anglo-Saxon laws in 1725–6 the complete works of John Selden and in 1731 the Coptic Pentateuch. His main work was his Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae an account of British church councils from 446 to 1717. The title pages to the Old Testament read "Bibliorum pars secunda -tertia quarta ." and "Libri apocryphi sive appendix Testamenti Veteris .". The divisional titles to part 4 and the Apocrypha are dated 1592. That to the New Testament reads "D.N. Jesu Christi Testamentum Novum ." and bears the imprint "Londini excudebant reg. typograph. Anno salutis humanæ 1592.". Tremellius's and Be`ze's versions of the New Testament are printed in parallel columns. P6 2S6 4X4 and 2L4 are blank. Bound in modern tan goatskin with handmade paper endpapers. Old endpapers preserved. Titlepage laid down with minor loss at lower corner. Some wear to lower blank corners at both ends of the volume evidence of its having been disbound fora considerable time. The printing was begun by Lucantonio Giunta but completed after his death. This is the only book listing both his name and his heirs in the imprint Camerini. Sextodecimo in half sheets 110 x 71 mm. 1-35 A-Z Aa-Bb maltese cross-2maltese cross ; 496 of 497 leaves bound without terminal blank. Contemporary calf covers blocked in bind with cross centrepiece. Spine backing partly lost exposing cords and manuscript backing title browned and contents toned very slight staining towards rear. Still a very good copy. Single column of text with two columns of gloss text column with 26 lines in a fine proto-gothic book hand. <br/> Verso with scant remnants of mounting tape in a couple of places along one edge. See Gwara Handlist no. 77. ◆Upper margin of fore edge unevenly trimmed away but no text lost a dozen-and-a-half small round wormholes touching just a couple letters light soiling to edges and other minor imperfections but still IN FINE CONDITION the vellum very clean and the ink dark and legible.<br/> <br/> The most important innovation in biblical scholarship during the 12th century was the development of the "Glossa Ordinaria" to the Bible. Drawing on the whole earlier tradition of biblical exegesis but especially that of Latin patristic writers like Augustine and Jerome scholars working in the French cathedral schools of Laon and Paris systematized this material in an apparatus of marginal and interlinear glosses arranged around the relevant biblical passages. The present leaf showing a particularly beautiful and regular script is a lovely example of one such work. The biblical text appearing in the center column is differentiated by larger lettering and gloss appears interlineally and in a column on either side of the main text all in smaller lettering by the same hand. Scott Gwara notes that the parent manuscript was formerly in the Medieval library of St. Oyan at St.-Claude du Jura a Benedictine monastery founded as the Abbey of Condat around 425 and later known as St. Oyen after an obscure saint who served as Condat's fourth abbot. In the 13th century it was renamed St.-Claude. By the 20th century the manuscript was in the collection of William L. Clements d. 1934 the bulk of which was sold by his estate between 1934-37. The manuscript was then acquired and dismembered by biblioclast Otto Ege around 1939. Gwara notes that the manuscript was incomplete by the time it reached Ege containing only 80 leaves but was "otherwise in excellent condition." The present leaf certainly attests to this assertion being extremely clean bright and with comfortable margins. unknown
