Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Light bump to lower edge of front board. DJ has minor edgewear with 1 small tear. ; This book examines the ideological reception of Virgil at specific moments in the past two millennia. It focuses on the emperor Augustus in the poetry of Virgil, detects in the poets and grammarians of antiquity pro- and anti-Augustan readings, studies Dryden's 1697 Royalist translation, and also naive American translation. It scrutinizes nineteenth-century philology's rewriting or excision of troubling readings, and covers readings by both supporters and opponents of fascism and National Socialism. Finally it examines how successive ages have made the Aeneid conform to their upbeat expectations of this poet. ; 346 pages

Concernant la page 61 : "Idle walking condemned in Sparta". Beautiful copy, complete with both parts. An old handwritten annotation in English, written on front endpaper and attributable to the author of the ex-libris, William R. Williams, notes in the penultimate page from the preface the evocation of "Victims of St Barthelemeos Massacres throughout France 22 years before estimated at 60,000". Regarding page 16 of the second part, he comments: "pointing gunpowder not modern inventions". Regarding page 61: "Idle walking condemned in Sparta". latin
