Gift inscription to W. J. Slater from Calder III to ffep. Very minor shelfwear. A couple of corrections in pen done in author's hand to 2 pages. ; The volume gathers for the first time thirty-five scattered articles by Calder published 1958-1998 concerned with the political content of selected tragedies and their staging from Thespis to Seneca. An historian seeks to see tragedies in context, whether Pericles’ Athens or Nero’s Rome. He regularly contests the opinio communis. Eumenides protests against Periclean reform. Zeus in Prometheus is the tyrant Demos. Kreon not Antigone is the hero of Antigone. Neoptolemos in Philoctetes is a clever deceiver from the start. Sophocles Oinomaos was the inspiration of the East Pediment at Olympia. Atreus in Seneca’s Thyestes is the model whom Nero is urged to follow. The usual size of the Senecan chorus was three, never fifteen. Thespis’ chorus was six. A careful index locorum antiquorum ends the volume and makes the material easily accessible. ; Spudasmata Band 104; 431 pages; Signed by Author

Pictoral boards. Light pencilling to a few pages by R. E. Fantham else fine. ; This is the first collection of essays in any language on Aulus Gellius. Its contributors, both established and younger scholars, include Gellian experts looking out with specialists in other fields looking in; they combine traditional and new approaches. Subjects range from the bilingual culture in which Gellius wrote, through his stylistic judgements, his skills in etymology and narrative, his relation to the antiquarian tradition, the generic expectations of miscellany, his claim to educate his readers, the theory of "Gellian humanism," and his attitude towards intellectuals, to his reception in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Scientific Revolution. ; 408 pages
Light edgewear. Gift inscription from author to R. E. Fantham on ffep. ; Synthesizing a wealth of detailed observations, Joseph Solodow studies the structure of Ovid's poem Metamorphoses, the role of the narrator, Ovid's treatment of myth, and the relationship between Ovid's and Virgil's presentations of Aeneas. He argues that for Ovid metamorphosis is an act of clarification, a form of artistic creation, and that the metamorphosed creatures in his poem are comparable to works of art. These figures ultimately aid us in perceiving and understanding the world. ; 288 pages; Signed by Author
