L'intenzione che ci ha mossi era quella di stampare un'edizione critica, dopo le altre già pubblicate, meritorie nelle loro intenzioni di far conoscere a un vasto pubblico questa perla della nostra letteratura minore, integrando con commenti, ampliamenti, delucidazioni di carattere storico, soprattutto di storia locale, toponomastico, linguistico, etimologico o letterario il testo curato da Padre Pirri - di questo straordinario studioso tracciamo una bio-bibliografia molto più completa ricavando le notizie dalle molte apparse dal 1969, data della sua morte. Le stesse note del curatore, sia nell'indispensabile introduzione che a piè pagina - sono precise e profonde; ma riteniamo che per alcune di esse siano necessari ulteriori chiarimenti, così come è opportuna la spiegazione di termini e modi di dire locali che soltanto chi è originario della zona a cavallo tra Umbria e Marche probabilmente oggi può conoscere o capire. Crediamo inoltre indispensabile affrontare anche il tema dei poeti-pastori, uno (o molto più probabilmente due) dei quali sarebbe stato, secondo una teoria consolidata, ma discutibile, l'autore (o gli autori) del poemetto.
