Morison begins with an example of alphabetic forms on a 6th century BC gravestone from Melos and proceeds through commentary on a notable collection of more than 180 illustrated specimens, to trace the career of the Graeco-Roman alphabet up to its use in newspaper typefaces of the 1950s. He also seeks to show that the most widely used printers' typefaces of the twentieth century owe more to their Greek than to their Roman antecedents.

Il trattato di Orsolina Montevecchi, abbracciando panoramicamente tutto l'ambito della Papirologia greca e latina, fornisce una precisa informazione ai fini dell'insegnamento universitario e, per i cultori della materia e gli studiosi di discipline affini, delinea un quadro generale, integrando e aggiornando analoghi strumenti di lavoro. La vastità dell'argomento e il suo continuo ampliarsi (ogni giorno infatti si vanno scoprendo e pubblicando nuovi documenti) hanno necessariamente indotto l'autrice ad entrare in campi diversi, da quello filologico a quello giuridico, dal paleografico al linguistico, dallo storico al letterario, e a sottolineare la provvisorietà di non pochi fra i risultati delle ricerche finora compiute. Il lavoro, aggiornato in base alle più recenti scoperte, dispone la bibliografia dei singoli argomenti in ordine cronologico, proprio per presentare le varie ricerche nel loro graduale sviluppo, favorito appunto dal frequente aumento della documentazione. Nella scelta delle tavole è stato perseguito un duplice scopo, paleografico e documentario: dare un'idea dell'evoluzione della scrittura greca nei papiri, e presentare esemplari di alcuni tipi di documenti, con la relativa trascrizione. Quest'opera, nata in primo luogo dall'esigenza di fare il punto delle attuali conoscenze nel campo di una disciplina in continuo sviluppo, qual è la Papirologia, a cui siamo debitori di molte nuove acquisizioni nel campo delle civiltà e del mondo antico.
