First illustrated Italian edition: a charming edition of the Heyaryek-Rouz or Thousand and One Days so-called to give the work an air of originality Chauvin IV 124. A Persian manuscript of this work was given to Francois Petit de la Croix in Isfahan in 1675 but enjoyed far fewer editions and translations than the Alf layla wa-layla. As Chauvin notes it cannot be determined whether the Thousand and one days or the Thousand and One Nights was composed first nevertheless to this day the Heyarek-Rouz is much less well-known to the Western world IV 123f. Chauvin quotes one commentator who declares the Heyarek-Rouz much more ingenious and more realistic as it sometimes includes marvels following the taste of the Oriental. This is one of the finest Italian editions of the Nights both for its impressive set of plates and for its translation. The editor and translator Antonio Francesco Falconetti had worked on a greatly expanded French corpus that is considered one of the most complete versions of the work: The translation entirely new is based on the latest Paris edition found for the part already made public by Galland on original texts amended and enlarged with new stories by M. Destains and then completed with the addition of a very large number of previously unpublished novellas discovered by M. Hammer which form a good third of the entire series editors preface vol. I p. Lithographed folding panorama showing 8 different lithographed scenes captioned in and beneath the illustrations of the Italian War of 1859 from the French-Italian perspective.The 8 scenes 5 3-leaf scenes and 3 single leaf scenes are assembled to make a single long foldout as assembled with the text: 21.5 x 395 cm; image size 19 x ca. 310 cm coloured by a contemporary hand. 5 ll. of letterpress text and the lithographed folding panorama. Second known copy of a lithographic panorama of the Italian War of 1859 also known as the Second Italian War of Independence. This war was fought in the northwest Piedmont region of Italy pitting the Second French Empire and Savoy-Piedmont-Sardinia against the Austrian Empire and it proved crucial in the process of Italian unification. The text and following hand-coloured lithographs describe and depict eight stages of the war from the departure of French troops for Italy to their return some months later and highlighting several important battles including those at Magenta and Solferino. As a result the influence of the Austrian Empire in Italy was greatly reduced.The present work is extremely rare: we have located only one other copy at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and it moreover differs slightly from the present one.The title-page functions as the front paste-down the text and illustration of the panorama fold out from there. The text and illustration have been printed on one side of the paper. With a French inscription in pencil at the head of the first page. The binding is somewhat foxed and browned the front board is slightly cracked the red cloth around the spine is slightly faded the back hinge is weakened some occasional staining and very slight foxing throughout. Very Good. 8vo; 246 & 2 blank pages; TWO interesting contemporary accounts of Napoleon Bonaparte both first editions - one published in 1820; the other in 1831 bound together in a handsome octavo volume. The binding is in the Romantique style: quarter black calf over marbled paper covered boards flat spine richly decoratively stamped in gilt plain laid endpapers edges decoratively sprinkled blue. Ad I: 'Biografia istorica del prigioniere di S. Elena : con una descrizione topografica di quest'isola / estratta dalla Galleria de' contemporanei di Luigi Jullian ; prima versione italiana eseguita sull'ultima edizione francese da Domenico Solito.' Napoli : Raffaele Miranda 1831. This copy is signed in ink by Domenico Solito the Italian translator on the verso of the half title page underneath a printed notice to the effect that purchasers should consider copies offered for sale without the signature as counterfeits. The French original was published in several editions as: 'Notice biographique sur Napoléon. Extrait de la galerie historique des contemporains.' This title had appeared in a third edition by 1822: "Troisième édition augmentée jusqu'a sa mort." Bruxelles : Auguste Wahlen et compagnie 1822. The larger work referred to was written by Pierre Louis Pascal de Jullian: "Galerie historique des Contemporains ou nouvelle Biographie seule e´dition dans laquelle se trouven re´unis les hommes morts ou vivans de toutes les nations qui se sont fait remarquer a la fin du 18-me sie`cle et au commencement de celui-ci par leurs e´crits leurs actions leurs talens leurs vertus ou leurs crimes." This work eventually grew to several volumes. The 1831 first edition in Italian is quite scarce to the point that it does not appear in OCLC. There are copies in a few Italian institutions located in the OPAC SBN. There is some diffuse foxing throughout probably associated with the quality of the paper used in this edition as the binding is well preserved. Ad II: 'Massime e pensieri del prigioniere di Sant-Elena manoscritto trovato nelle carte de Las-Casas. Tradotto dal francese da Felice Miola.' Napoli: Dalla tipografia di Porcelli 1820. 8vo: 115 & 1 blank pp. This was presented at the time of publication as written or dictated by Napoleon himself. Now historians generally accept the notion that the text reflects mostly the work of the man to whom it was supposed to have been dictated -- Emmanuel-Auguste-Dieudonne´ comte de Las Cases. In the same manner as the first volume bound here this copy is signed by the Italian translator this time on the verso of the title page. This title does appear in OCLC see number: 18586354 -- four locations only: 2 copies at Harvard 1 each at UC Berkeley and the University of Manchester UK Library. There was another Italian version published during that same year of 1820 in Palermo That one appeared without a translator's name specified but stated: "Novissima traduzione interamente riformata e ricorretta." The Palermo edition is most likely the sort of thing that Felice Miola and his Neapolitan publisher were hoping to avoid by signing the "genuine" copies like ours. OCLC locates a copy of the Palermo verso at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Two rare Italian contributions to the vast literature of Napoleon one published while the former Emperor was still held by the British on remote Saint Helena. There are no marks of ownership other than the faint number "959" stamped at the upper corner of the first title. Both titles have diffuse moderate foxing; there is some toning to the upper portions of the leaves of the second title. The splendid binding is well preserved apart from some erosion of the marbled paper at the edges and corners of the boards.; Signed by Translator . Raffaele Miranda hardcover

Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images. A VERY HANDSOME COLLECTION OF GERMAN ENGRAVINGS BASED ON ITALIAN RELIGIOUS ART OF THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES. The six plates included are:<br><br>1. The contents comprising 20 finely hand-coloured engraved plates on thick paper depicting various regional costumes with printed titles above and beneath with blank protective leaf between each plate. The plates irregularly numbered as they were originally issued as part of the 'Modes Parisiennes' periodical. A very good copy the binding firm with a 2cm tear to the head of the lower cover creasing to the corners and a little chipping to the spine ends and corners. The contents with the occasional minor finger-mark to the edges of the blank margins are otherwise in very good order the plates remaining clean and vivid. A selection of beautifully hand-coloured engravings illustrating regional costumes of Algeria Spain Italy Portugal Greece and Eastern Europe issued by the French fashion periodical 'Modes Parisiennes'. "Q. Does God's holy law permit rebelliousness against one's temporal Sovereign R. Never indeed condemns it highly; for the sacred writing which as you know is the very word of God declares that the High Official Podesta does not come from God but whoever resists him resists precisely the ordination of God and thus proceeds to damnation." Thus begins Count Monaldo Leopardi's 1776-1847 counter-revolutionary Catechism on Revolutions arguing that Christianity and the French Revolution are incompatible that the rebellion is an ignominious revolt against the metaphysical and social order established by God and that tradition is more important that abstract concepts of liberalism. Meant for use in schools it was one of two essays published by Leopardi in 1832. Two editions were published in 1832 both rather uncommon. This edition without date and publisher but which Sorbelli's "Opuscoli stampe alla macchia e fogli volanti riflettenti il pensiero politico italiano: 1830-1835" dates as 1832 is held by only two libraries: Univ. 1845054818Paris: Imp. Lemercier 1845. No Binding. Very Good. A fine original chromo-lithograph print from "Souvenirs de Constantinople" by Brindesi printed in 1845. Framed but will be sent no frame. 52x49 cm / 39x 44 cm print area. Stains on right bottom margins of the paper. The Ottoman navy stationed in front of the Tophane Artillery barracks is preparing to sail under the leadership of Kapudan Pasha's ship "Amiraute". Jean Brindesi was born in 1826 and worked primarily as a watercolour artist. During the Abdulmecid period 1831-1861 he worked on scenes involving soldiers in Istanbul. Two albums of lithographs after his drawings were produced by Lemercier in Paris: Elbicei Atika - Musee des Anciens Costumes Turcs de Constantinople 1855 and Souvenirs de Constantinople 1860; these two works are collections of picturesque views of the city of Constantinople.
