Folio Volume I. bound in full contemporary calf illustrated with engraved folding maps and genealogical charts headpieces tailpieces and initials. In good condition. French historian Paul de Rapin's History of England as an influential exposition of the Whig view of history on both sides of the English Channel. Initially published in French all volumes of his work were translated to English in a total of 14 volumes from 1727 by the Reverend Nicolas Tindal who added large numbers of informative notes throughout the volumes which were illustrated with engravings maps and genealogical tables of great quality. Folio disbound 8 pages. ¶ An act passed by parliament under the reign of George II that attempts to discourage swearing by establishing a set of fines for the offenders: first time offenders could be fined from one to five shillings; seamen soldiers and government employees were fined at rates lower than gentlemen; and swearing within earshot of a constable could land one in a house of corrections or the stocks. He was friends with Hester Lynch Piozzi who wrote the epilogue to The Regent. ESTC T22278; Eddy Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer in the Literary Magazine 26; Hanley Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer pages 134-36. First and final leaves a little dust-soiled; very good copy. 8vo modern brown quarter buckram blue paper boards gilt lettering. With half-title. ¶ A defense of Admiral John Byng 1704-1757 of the Royal Navy who was on trial for treason based on dubious charges. He was found guilty and was tragically executed the following year. Shebbearre 1709-1788 a pamphleteer and contrarian wrote numerous tracts during the political crises of 1755-56 attacking the misadventures of the English government abroad. None according to Shebbearre were more blatantly wrongheaded than the trial of John Byng. Shebbearre's perceived lack of patriotism landed him in prison and he was roundly criticized and lampooned by the likes of Johnson Smollett and Griffith. Johnson eventually sided with Shebbearre in the Byng matter and approvingly reviewed An Appeal to the People in the Literary Magazine in October 1756. ESTC attributes An Appeal to John Byng himself and he did write pamphlets in his own defense but both Hanley and Eddy show convincing evidence that this was indeed by Shebbearre. <br/><br/> London: Printed for J. Johnson wrote the dedication to Cyrus and John Hawksworth wrote the epilogue. Hoole was best known for his translation of Tasso which earned him the nickname of "Tasso Hoole." The Meretriciad which went through six editions within a few years celebrates in verse the charms of the famous English courtesan Kitty Fisher and some of her colleagues. This map of St. Peters in Newfoundland was part of the fourth book "The West-India Navigation" published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1751. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800. On the back of the page is a beautiful print of two Auks along with a description of the birds and their abundance in this area. These birds were eventually hunted into extinction.<br/><br/> W. & J.
