Fourth Edition in Latin of one of the most popular eighteenth-century utopian novels second only to Gulliver's Travels eventually reaching some 60 editions in 13 different languages. Small 8vo: 10360pp with portrait frontispiece engraved title-page folding map and six full-page plates engraved by Brühl the 1741 first edition published in Copenhagen contained only 3 three plates in addition to the frontispiece; the first English edition none. Contemporary dark brown mottled sheep elaborately gilded spine sewn on five bands green and tan lettering pieces gilt red paste-paper end papers marbled edges. Spine rubbed with some loss of gilt else an extremely pleasing and collectible copy of this satirical romance in the style of Gulliver's Travels although Bleiler notes that "Holberg's satire is wider in scope more penetrating in analysis and less local than Swift's" by the father of Danish literature "Holberg found Denmark with no books and he wrote a library for her."—Encyclopedia Britannica. Originally published in 1741 this highly imaginative Swiftian journey to a fifth underground continent is set in the Norwegian town of Bergen where a penniless student visits a strange cave falls into a void and ends up on the subterranean planet Nazar which is inhabited by sentient monkeys thinking trees goat philosophers and double basses that communicate musically. According to Lewis Utopian Literature p. 92 Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of the astronomer Edmond Haley's theory suggested in a paper published by the Royal Society in 1692 that three concentric hollow balls nested inside the earth account for the magnetism of the poles through their movement and that openings at the poles provide access to hidden worlds through a series of caves. Nor was Haley alone: from the 1600s to the early 1900s the notion of a hollow earth was treated seriously by leading scientists including Johannes Kepler and Athanasius Kircher. N. B. An attractively bound eighteenth-century Edinburgh-printed edition of the controversial ‘Laud’s Prayer book’ an avowedly English-influenced version of the liturgy issued by Robert Young printer to Charles I in 1637. Drafted by the Bishops of Ross and Dunblane John Maxwell d. 1639 and James Wedderburn 1585-1639 the Scottish Book of Common prayer was largely based upon the rite first issued in 1549 during the reign of King Edward VI. Introduced to an unaccepting Scottish population on 23rd July 1637 by Archbishop Laud at the behest of King Charles I it attempted to replace John Knox's Calvinist Book of Common Order and proved the greatest symbol of the unpopular standardisation of Anglican Protestantism throughout the British Isles. The text was one of several triggers of the Covenant movement and the first stages of the War of Three Kingdoms.Despite its unpopularity this historic text influenced the 1662 revision of the English Liturgy the 1789 American Book of Common Prayer and the Scottish Episcopalian Liturgy of 1929. Thomas Maitland Lord Dundrennan 1792-1851 judge and sometime Solicitor General for Scotland. A devotee of antiquarian literature Dundrennan amassed an extensive library - 'a monument' according to Lord Cockburn 'honourable to his taste and judgment'. Originally issued in parts the work is rarely found complete with all plates. As the publishers state "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume and in any order they please" as a consequence of which few copies have the full quota of plates. Based upon earlier maps by Herman Moll published in London 1700-1750. The individual map titles are: New Engelland New York New Yersey und Pensilvania; Carolina neksteinem Theil von Florida; Virginia und Maryland; and New Founland od Terra Nova S. Laurentii Bay⦠New Schotland. There is finely engraved text at the bottom which include notes on the maps and the Iroquois Indians. These detail the most current information from the British Colonies including dozens of place names Indian Settlements roads postal information etc. They also provide: details on battles with the Indians by Col. Barnwell and Col Craven in the Carolina map details on Indian and English plantations on the Maryland and Virginia map and many other details. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann they were very prominent map publishers. business was passed to his son Christoph upon Johannâs death in 1724. Young Christoph died in 1730 and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company which was later known as Homann Erben or Homann heirs. Folio contemporary brown smooth calf red morocco spine label five raised bands gilt lettering. Engraved title-page and 123 engraved copper plates. A complete run of 42 issues of an illustrated magazine published by George Kearsly between 1774 and 1777 intended to display and celebrate the art of copperplate engraving. Each of the 123 examples is accompanied by a leaf of explanatory text. The subjects include portraits 25 English and 16 French - all men historical events mythology and fables 40 plates including several dedicated to scenes from Telemachus and views of important castles houses and other picturesque structures and places 42 plates including two of Strawberry Hill. At least 12 engravers were involved among them Thomas Cook Thomas Ryder William Sharp William Walker Charles Grignion the Younger John Hall William Watts Valentine Green and Joseph Collyer. The final leaf of text has directions to the binder for the arrangement of the plates which the binder of this volume adhered to perfectly. The Copper Plate Magazine was a perfect candidate for breakers and grangerizers and complete volumes are uncommon today. Lightly soiled surface abrasion towards head on the left hand side but not affecting image several small worm holes but again not affecting image or text. Vignette to head showing Penderel holding a billhook in the foreground with the king on a horse in disguise to the background. Penderel's epitaph is recorded towards the bottom of the engraving with an added note that George II had ordered that his monument be 'cleaned up & beautified in the year 1739'. Engraved broadside celebrating the life of Richard Penderel Richard Pendrill of Hobball Grange Shropshire who with his four brothers saved the life of Charles II after the battle of Worcester hiding him from Cromwell's soldiers. After the Restoration both he and his brothers were rewarded with a pension and he was known as 'Trusty Dick' at Court. He died in 1671 while visiting London and his surviving brothers were later granted exemption from prosecutions for recusancy after the 'Popish Plot'. In 1756 he became a prisoner of war with the entire army in Prussia. Because of his small stature he succeeded in escaping disguised as a milkmaid. He went to Warsaw where he could present to the military commander cartographic military information based upon his prison-of-war experiences. In 1760 he was a participant in the Battle of Torgau. He was lightly wounded and his horse was killed. The Prince of Saxony's intercession led to Tielke's promotion to Souslieutenant second lieutenant. In 1761 he belonged to the army of Prince Albrecht of Saxony. In 1762 Tielke's unit was stationed in Silesia. After the Seven Years' War the Saxon troops were redeployed. Tielke was promoted to Premierlieutenant and then Stabscapit n. During the War of the Bavarian Succession he commanded an artillery battery as Compagniechef. During the remainder of his career he was garrisoned mainly at Freiberg. Growing up in poverty Tielke had not received any academic training and yet he became a world-class expert on military fortifications intelligence artillery tactics and strategy. On these subjects he published several treatises which were republished numerous times and translated into English and French. His writings were acknowledged in other German principalities and by Frederick the Great of Prussia.<br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT <br /> <br /> VERY GOOD <br /> <br /> Exterior and binding: Square spines firm hinges and joints bumping to a few corners tight pages. Light signs of handling - some bent page corners a few small margin tears a few smudges. The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. Rumball-Petre 172; Sabin 5173 variant; O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . A rare early American bible advertised as the "first American pocket bible" being Young's second edition of the bible complete with metrical psalms following his edition from a different setting of 1790 Evans 22345; Hills 25. That bible was advertised for sale by Young in Dunlap's American Daily Advertise in May 1791 as "lately published" at the price of "6-1/2 dollars cash and 7 if entered on account." Although both that bible and the present edition are duodecimo the former is larger in both height and width and the 1791 advertisement continues by noting that "An edition of the Bible in pocket size is now in the press." The present Bible would be advertised in Philadelphia newspapers in September and October 1792 as "now in the press the first American edition of the Pocket Bible . printed on fine paper with good type." <br /> <br /> Small-format American bibles published less than a decade after the Aitken bible are rare and this would appear to be the smallest bible in English published in America to date. Despite early revisions and some major alterations following the Restoration the original simplicity of the language has been presevered the text remaining substantially unaltered since 1662.
