Paper repaired on the verso; some soiling and smudges; chipped in the upper margin with some loss but only to the blank margins; two small remains of mounting tape on the verso in the upper margin; a rare survival. Broadside 36 x 12 cm woodcut headpiece. Nine four-line stanzas. Attractive oval stamp in the lower margin of Peter Henry Chymist. A typical doggerel poem and somewhat bawdy written in the form of a slip ballad which begins "You young men all both far and near / Listen a while and you shall hear / Take care you're not drawn in a snare / By the girls that do love brandy / Wack Fla la &c." Contemporary black morocco spine divided in six compartments by raised bands compartments divided saltire-wise with dotted rules with tulip-head tools and dots sides gilt with a central lozenge built up of massed tools enclosed by an outer lozenge of rolls and flower-heads cornerpieces outer French fillet in gilt turn-ins gilt with floral roll comb-marbled endpapers gilt edges. In 1756 he became a prisoner of war with the entire army in Prussia. Because of his small stature he succeeded in escaping disguised as a milkmaid. He went to Warsaw where he could present to the military commander cartographic military information based upon his prison-of-war experiences. In 1760 he was a participant in the Battle of Torgau. He was lightly wounded and his horse was killed. The Prince of Saxony's intercession led to Tielke's promotion to Souslieutenant second lieutenant. In 1761 he belonged to the army of Prince Albrecht of Saxony. In 1762 Tielke's unit was stationed in Silesia. After the Seven Years' War the Saxon troops were redeployed. Tielke was promoted to Premierlieutenant and then Stabscapit n. During the War of the Bavarian Succession he commanded an artillery battery as Compagniechef. During the remainder of his career he was garrisoned mainly at Freiberg. Growing up in poverty Tielke had not received any academic training and yet he became a world-class expert on military fortifications intelligence artillery tactics and strategy. On these subjects he published several treatises which were republished numerous times and translated into English and French. His writings were acknowledged in other German principalities and by Frederick the Great of Prussia.<br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT <br /> <br /> VERY GOOD <br /> <br /> Exterior and binding: Square spines firm hinges and joints bumping to a few corners tight pages. Grubbiness to endpapers and toning. Former owner bookplate of "Pat Murray" on front pastedown of each volume. Foxing to prelims and blanks; some light to scattered clusters of foxing on plates. Light signs of handling - some bent page corners a few small margin tears a few smudges. Leaf 25-26 in Volume I with a penny-sized area of paper loss to bottom margin from insect predation not affecting text. Because the sheets were sold unbound it is possible that they were issued as parts. 31 leaves from the Apocrypha E4 through I2 are misbound into Volume IV. In their correct spot are bound 2 blank leaves. Old Testament and New Testament have separate title-pages. With a chart page after the Old Testament and after the New Testament. Bible is complete. Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards. Ink title to spine of each volume. Previous owner's bookplate and signature dated 1770 on front pastedown of each volume. Title-page of each volume with some old ink manuscript notes to top margin. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Some minor staining and wrinkling to bottom margin of signature Iii. Overall very good or better copy. Just two years after Joseph Bentham published this present copy his Bible of 1762 was marked the "standard edition" according to Darlow & Moule. Herbert 1131. Badger 1834-36. & Charles Jacobs of Gilmanton. <br/><br/>Isaiah Thomas whom Benjamin Franklin called 'the Baskerville of America' was one of the notable publishers during the early days of the Republic.He made every effort to ensure accuracy of the text by comparing some thirty different editions and having the text carefully examined by several clergymen and others who compared it with eight Bibles - Herbert 1353." The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. Rumball-Petre 172; Sabin 5173 variant; O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . Included are 200 pages of Tables Apocrypha and Family Records Index etc. The subscription price was $7 but half the price could be paid in wheat rye Indian corn butter or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. "The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography excellence of paper binding and general execution - Wright EARLY BIBLES OF AMERICA." A rare early American bible advertised as the "first American pocket bible" being Young's second edition of the bible complete with metrical psalms following his edition from a different setting of 1790 Evans 22345; Hills 25. That bible was advertised for sale by Young in Dunlap's American Daily Advertise in May 1791 as "lately published" at the price of "6-1/2 dollars cash and 7 if entered on account." Although both that bible and the present edition are duodecimo the former is larger in both height and width and the 1791 advertisement continues by noting that "An edition of the Bible in pocket size is now in the press." The present Bible would be advertised in Philadelphia newspapers in September and October 1792 as "now in the press the first American edition of the Pocket Bible . printed on fine paper with good type." <br /> <br /> Small-format American bibles published less than a decade after the Aitken bible are rare and this would appear to be the smallest bible in English published in America to date. Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: <br/><br/>"Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." <br/><br/>Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere.<br/><br/>The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish.<br/><br/>That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself.<br/><br/>John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

For while being additionally the uncommon first printing in America of the Gospels in English in any translation other than the King James or the Douai-Rheims version this is also the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America.<br>Â Â Â Â George Campbell 171996 was a minister of the Church of Scotland theologian and principal of Marischal College. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Title-page and contents leaf with early inked inscriptions reading "Jas. Booth. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â ESTC W4383; Evans 30086; Hills English Bible in America 56. On Campbell see: The Dictionary of National Biography. New Testament ONLY. 1 f. pp. 7891012; 19 plts. <br><br>Present here is the extracted New Testament from => the first folio Bible printed in America from the press of the printer whom Ben Franklin called the "Baskerville of America." Being also only the fourth complete Protestant Bible in English printed in the former British colonies its text is the standard King James version printed in double-column format in roman type; and Thomas's production is famous for its typography its achievement in size the pages are 15.5" tall and especially its illustrations. The plates 19 of them were engraved by four of America's greatest artisans: J. Norman Alexander Doolittle Joseph H. Seymour and Samuel Hill.<br>Â Â Â Â "An alphabetical table of proper names" was planned but not printed as indicated by the catchword on the final page; the table does appear in the quarto edition Thomas printed the same year. This volume does contain at its end the whole Bible's "Index to the Holy Bible" and its several "tables" of Weights Measures and Coins; Time; Offices and Conditions of Men; and Kindred and Affinity. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills 29; O'Callaghan 38; Herbert 1353; Rumball-Petre Rare Bibles 171; Evans 23186 Wright Early Bibles of America pp. 7488. 18th-century mottled calf nicely rebacked with edges of boards renewed and text block resewn. Old waterstaining from light to severe throughout extending across text and image areas of plates with very variable impact; age-toning occasional staining and off-setting from plates in only the usual degrees. Lower margins display some notable chips and purposeful paper tear-aways and a good many closed tears; only the latter reach sometimes into text without loss. Several plates have had closed tears neatly repaired from the rear; the plate of Mary Magdalen and the final leaf of the last Table show OLD replacement of paper where original paper was torn away from blank areas; the copy retains the old dog-earings and page-creasings of long use and bears pencillings on its final leaf. => A copy that has seen much happen to it over its more than 200 years of existence; still a sturdy interesting and imposing copy of this impressive early American New Testament. A beautiful unrestored copy and with Pierce family inscriptions on the endpapers. pp. 358 2 ads. 1 vols. 12mo. With unusual ownership painting on the endpaper identifying the Psalms as belonging to Benjamin Pierce's Book 1791 and depicting a man up a tree by way of ladder either to send apples to another man seated below or to read his psalms aloft in peace-- let the viewer be the judge! <br/><br/>The following leaf includes a calligraphic presentation in 1799 to James Pierce who notes its use by "the society in Brattle Square" which we take to mean the then Congregational and later c. 1805-1876 Unitarian Church on Brattle Street in Boston Massachusetts. <br/><br/>The church distinguished itself by its somewhat relaxed attitude toward rigid Calvinist practices and by iits array of important ministers: Benjamin Colman 1699-1747; William Cooper 1716-1743; Samuel Cooper 1747-1783; Peter Thacher 1785-1802; Joseph Stevens Buckminster 1805-1812; Edward Everett 1814-1815; John Gorham Palfrey 1813-1831; and Samuel Kirkland Lothrop 1834-1876. The parishioners were no less esteemed: John Hancock Samuel Adams Joseph Warren John Adams Abigail Adams Richard Clarke Elizabeth Greenleaf Jane Mecom John Lowell Lydia Hancock Henry Cabot Lodge James Bowdoin 1676-1747 and many others. Hans Gram played organ in the late 18th century. The Pierce family's early days in America perhaps coming as early as about 1620 were spent largely in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and their legacy includes Benjamin Pierce governor of New Hampshire 1827-1830 as well as ten generations spent in what is now an historic landmark of seventeenth-century architecture currently serving as a museum in Dorchester Massachusetts. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. One plate in this copy "The Parting of Lot and Abraham" is bound in upside-down.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Title-page with inked inscription in upper margin: "Benjamin Morris to Samuel White Sept. 17th 1826" and with tipped-in typed slip noting presentation to a seminary by the Rev. Title pages are printed in red and black with an elegant full-page copper engraving of Camden as the frontispiece of the first volume. There are 50 double-page maps of the English counties Ireland Scotland and 'the Islands'; six of the maps are folding. There are also twelve large full-page engravings and numerous smaller engravings in the text. There is a comprehensive index and the errata page is present. A previous owner has reinforced the hinges with linen-like binding tape. The boards are quite worn and rubbed but a competent bookbinder could restore both bindings. The contents are remarkable clean with only occasional foxing and a few stained pages. The maps by the cartographer Robert Morden and which are usually removed and sold individually are all in excellent condition. Overall a good set. William Camden 1551-1623 was an English antiquary and historian who during the reign of Queen Elizabeth travelled throughout England collecting material for 'Britannia' which was first published in 1586. Initially written in Latin it is a survey of the British islands; its archaeology geography institutions monetary system and inhabitants 'chiefly intended for the instruction of foreigners' or so Gibson states in his Preface to this edition. It was first translated into English in 1610 probably under Camden's direction see Ency. Brit. 11th vol. V p. 101. Gibson's revision was first published in 1695. Our set is the undated 'Second Edition' but by comparing particulars with available bibliographical resources we believe it was published in 1722. Printing and the Mind of Man 101.
