Patterned boards, 1/4 leather spine, leather cover label, gilt cover/spine titles. Seems to be a reprint of the 1928 subscriber edition. No former ownership marks. Light rubbing on the front cover plate, first 5 pages show some foxing, fore-edges slightly yellowed, otherwise very clean and sound, in great shape. The grandest compendium ever gathered of esoteric lore, mythology, and historical anecdote. Filled to the brim with ancient woodcuts. A dense encyclopedia and a solid starting point from which to dive into subjects such as the Qabbala, Alchemy, Tarot, Ceremonial Magic, Neo-Platonic Philosophy, Mystery Religions, and the theory of Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry.

This book brings together five collections of texts linked to the person of Alexander Hamilton, founding father of the then very young Republic of the United States. Of note: a few letters by Aaron Burr, the man who killed Hamilton in a duel... "An American statesman, Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757 – July 12, 1804) was an influential interpreter and promoter of the American Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the principal author of the economic policies of George Washington's administration. He initiated the financing of state debts by the federal government as well as the creation of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Great Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, with a national bank and support for manufacturing, and a strong military. This vision was challenged by the more agrarian Founding Fathers of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who formed a rival party. They favored strong states based in rural America and protected by relevant state militias rather than a strong national army and navy. They denounced Hamilton as too pro-Britain and the monarchy in general, and too oriented toward cities, businesses, and banks. This volume was published the same year that Hamilton died in the duel with Aaron Burr." Headbands. Volume I features a picture of two masked women as "The Usual Walking Costume of Lima", a short preface, 12 chapters, 5 colored plates and an unfolding map of South America. Volume II features four color plates, including a frontispiece as well, chapters 13-19, no less than 26 appendixes and a very long folding map. "Caldcleugh came to Brazil as private secretary to the British Ambassador, Edward Thornton. From October, 1819, until 1821 he lived in Rio, and from there travelled to Argentina and Chile. His return journey again took him through Brazil, and this time he visited Minas Geraes which he describes on pp. 178-288 of the second volume. Caldcleugh's work has great documentary value. An excellent and impartial observer, he describes Rio de Janeiro with great accuracy, and studies the social, agricultural, financial, and political situations in Brazil. The part referring to the mines in Minas Geraes is of great interest. The first volume contains two very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro." With 42 copper plates: 14 maps and 28 engravings, all folding (38 having dimensions close to the book itself or to unfold horizontally and 3 being large folding maps). Comes with a sliding protective case. This is a copy of George Anson's account of his circumnavigation voyage. Complete with all the features which are often missing or signal a later edition. A lively tale of hardship, courage, curiosity, risk-taking and doing the impossible: overtaking Spain on the Peru coast, taking a Spanish galleon and completing the travel around the world with an awesome booty and an epic story to tell.
