18882540891888. hardcover. These documents are dated from 1884 to 1892. Several are signed in type by Robert Todd Lincoln American Ambassador to the United Kingdom Department of State. 13.25 x 8.25-inch slim folio-sized volume bound with marble boards and leather 20 pages with the addition of an important typed letter signed by Benjamin F. Butler investigating a mass inheritance fraud perpetrated on the citizens of America by con artists in the United Kingdom. During this period American citizens would be notified that they were heirs to a large unclaimed English Estate or perhaps a large sum of money held in the Bank of England. To receive their inheritance they were told that certain legal fees and real estate transfer taxes would have to be paid to agents of the British Government. Another variation of the scheme involved American con artists placing advertisements in newspapers calling themselves "European claim agencies" and charging Americans exorbitant fees for investigating the ownership of non-existing estates. Lincoln is flustered because the American Legation in London is receiving hundreds of letters from American citizens who were swindled and yet little was being done in the United States to educate its citizens to the magnitude of the fraud. Mr. Lincoln to Mr. Blaine extract March 3 1891 ".since March 4 1889 one hundred and ninety 190 letters have been received at this Legation alleging the writers claims to large estates in England or to fantastic sums of money 'in chancery' or 'in the Bank of England' none of them containing an element of probability." In conclusion is a typed letter signed by former Union General Benjamin F. Butler 1 page on law office letterhead Boston November 14 1888 whereby he brings to light the vast magnitude of the con in part: ".I have now been more than 45 years in the practice of a legal profession more or less extensively. I have heard of more than 4500--I hope I do not exaggerate--cases of large estates in England awaiting American heirs and I have been consulted in a very great many and early in life looked into such matters; but I have not for the last 25 years at all because I never have heard of one dollar coming from England to any American heir on account of such estates. In the first place it is a legal impossibility unless the heirs are British subjects.all those I have ever known about are swindles." The decorations and initials were drawn and engraved by Henry Shaw who also supervised the engravings of the illustrations after Leonardo da Vinci Titian Raphael and other Italian masters; engravers involved with the project included F. Anderson James Cooper Messrs. Dalziel W.T. Green William Linton and many others all of whom labored mightily in this attempt to reproduce the feel of a 16th-century production.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed reddish-brown morocco binding by Root & Son with covers and spine gilt extra; extremely wide and handsome turn-ins elaborately gilt tooled.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front fly-leaf with attractively inked gift inscription to the Rev. 19207573United Kingdom 1920. Quarto-sized spring-back binder 29 x 24 cm. 10 84 pages numbered by hand. Detailed table of contents. Title from cover. Many leaves are carbon with a few the original and most leaves have a few holograph edits. Paper watermarked "Silver Line". An illustrated advertisement for the "Rekarts Instantaneous Spring Back Binder" pasted-down to front interior binding panel. Laid-in is an original photograph 20.5 x 16 cm. signed by the photographer "Thos. Tindall Hancock" the subject of the photo is presumably the compiler R.H. Murphy. ~ A "manuscript" cookbook with more than three hundred eighty recipes in ditto or mimeograph alternating blue or black ink many with holograph edits. Based on the style of edits textual and not culinary and the detailed Table of Contents it seems likely this was a compilation being prepared for publication. We have not however been able to identify a published work that corresponds with this text. After the nine page table of contents listing all the recipes there are three pages of miscellaneous remarks on cooking followed by sections on soups fish breakfast dishes joints and meats sweets and puddings iced sweets sweets and puddings and desserts again savouries vegetables sauces liquids juices and jams and cakes and breads. Desserts or sweets are the vast majority of recipes. Another section "Knitting and Miscellaneous" though referred to in the table of contents is missing. A range of recipes from various traditions is included spellings original: Mulligtawn soup palestine soup becamel of chicken Ketcherei with Finnan Haddock lobster a la Neuberg a breakfast cold chicken cream in aspic Neapolitan eggs hashed mutton beef galantine sardine fritters devils on horseback angels on horseback Welsh rabbit Mrs. Dunsmuir's Prize cake Sally Lunn Jessica's eggless cake a faroli souffle chocolate drops. Some recipes are labeled "War" likely wartime recipes which would at least provide an earliest date as during or post-WWI. Attributions are given for some recipes "Alice" "Gwen" "Francis" "Olivia" "Dorothy" "Margaret" "Jessica" "Mrs. Allen" "Dr. Lumsden" "Mrs. Freeman Plymouth" "Miss Fyfe" "Alice Monroe" "Mrs. Hall" "Nonnie Bennett" etc. The frequent use of first names indicates a casualness not seen in most earlier compilations. ~ In a brown pebbled cloth-covered spring-back binder gilt-titled on the front board. Contemporary unlettered red morocco spine gilt extra covers with gilt roll of vines at edges with oval black morocco central inlay with the sacred monogram and cross within a gilt sunburst a.e.g. marbled endsheets. Vertical crack in spine with shallow losses at crown and toe front binder's blank detached but present rear inner hinge cracking after free endsheet some wear to joints and forecorners; still a good internally fresh and crisp copy. An attractive octavo printing including the Apocrypha. Wright and Gill printed an edition in folio the same year. A highly likely association copy of some interest signed on the front binder's blank "Sarah S. Villiers 1804" probably Sarah Sophia Child-Villiers 1785-1867 Countess of Jersey and with the earlier signature of "Sarah Child 1779" her mother Sarah Anne Child 1764-1793. Sarah Childs married Lord Villiers on 23 May 1804. As heir to Child's Bank and to the property at Osterley Park she brought considerable resources to the marriage and was engaged as an active partner at the bank. She exerted influence in political circles and was prominent socially sufficient to provide models for fictional characters in novels by Disraeli and Lady Caroline Lamb. ESTC T91638. 1792WRCLIT76093London: Printed for Bellamy and Roberts 1792. Four volumes bound in six. Quarto. Contemporary unlettered calf marbled endsheets spines gilt. Plates and maps some folding. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Campbell's translation of the Gospels were first printed in the U.S. in 1796 and was the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America. This is only the second edition printed in America. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â ESTC W4382; Evans 35200; Hills English Bible in America 71. On Campbell see: The Dictionary of National Biography. Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. An attorney by profession Brockett 1788-1842 was a dedicated antiquarian with an interest in philology printing and book collecting. His 1818 Hints on the Propriety of Establishing a Typographical Society in Newcastle led to the founding of that society. Brockett assembled remarkable collections of books medals and coins and the sale of part of his library in 1823 through Sotheby's lasted fourteen days and raised more than £4000. That sale catalogue notes numerous bindings bearing his arms by the great London binder Charles Lewis 1786-1836. The present binding is unsigned but of a very high quality suggesting it may also be an example of Lewis' work for presentation or for the author's own shelf.<br/>The regular edition was printed in 600 copies. This large paper copy is about 2 inches taller.<br/>A fascinating work on dialects in the north of England in a fine binding bearing the arms of the author. Fine copy. 4to recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel marbled paper boards gilt rules decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy dedicated to Joshua Reynolds a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface Petit Mot Pour Rire "a small joke" Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" "the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . ." and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House where it moved in 1780.
