The letterpress title page of The Large English Atlas adopts a dignified full-folio design declaring the works grand ambition and learned purpose through finely set serif type. The title itself dominates in full capitals while italic accents lend emphasis and rhythm. Clear hierarchies and generous spacing enhance legibility and poise. Stripped of decoration or ornament the page conveys assurance through restraint confident in its authority. Letterpress 25 x 49; sheet 39 x 58 cms. Pococke did put a nose on his illustration of the Sphinx and had some other inaccuracies. Despite such errors Pococke's book is generally regarded as one of the best early accounts of travel in the Middle East. This is not the finest of copies but it is an inexpensive and serviceable copy of the 1754 German edition of the Pococke's Egyptian volume. hardcover

The corners are heavily scuffed and there are lots of small rub marks on the spine though the spine text remains legible. Pencil notation inside front cover; text otherwise unmarked by previous owners. The frontispiece is dampstained and all pages are lightly foxed and age-toned. Some occasional light fingerprint smudges as well. The plates have faded slightly onto their facing pages. The binding is tight. Very good condition for an 18th-century book! A book of poems fables and fictional conversations between children and a teacher designed to educate and promote moral virtues. The work is dedicated to Princess Amelia daughter of King George III. Illustrated with a frontispiece 12 engraved plates and 2 plates of music. Hatchard unknown

Image with text measures 18.5" x 11.75".<br/> <br/> From the "English Pilot" a composite sea-chart atlas published in several editions from 1671 to 1803. This map of St. Peters in Newfoundland was part of the fourth book "The West-India Navigation" published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1751. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800. On the back of the page is a beautiful print of two Auks along with a description of the birds and their abundance in this area. These birds were eventually hunted into extinction.<br/> <br/> W. & J.
