187133942Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text. <p>The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.<p>The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.<p>Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown
1857W2708<p>Philadelphia: Beck & Lawton 1857. Folio 13 1/2 " X 10 1/4". Original sheet music on 6 pages. Cover art is an original stone lithograph by Philadelphia lithographers Schnabel & Finkeldey. Francis Florentine Hagen 1815-1907 was the Moravian minister who wrote the music for this hymn which traditionally has been performed in Moravian churches on Christmas Eve. Hagen wrote the music sometime between 1836 and 1854 but this 1857 sheet music appears to be the first published edition. Martin Houser's translation from the German poem appears to have been used only in the first edition. Later editions include significantly different lyrics by a different translator. That may help to explain why this sheet music is so SCARCE especially with this lithograph on the cover--WorldCat locates only two copies in libraries. The condition is about very good: the 3 leaves of sheet music are disbound with minimal roughness along the binding edge primarily from the stab Holes and with a one inch closed tear in the top margin of all leaves. 1886100786<p>Queens House Chelsea London March 28 1886. 1886. Very good. - Over 100 words penned on 3 sides of 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. In his letter penned vertically and horizontally the English cleric and author of "Music and Morals" Hugh Reginald Haweis writes that he'll be lecturing in Canada "I think I may say that I shall not go right along Canada ___ but only visit Quebec Montreal & Toronto etc. in Canada where I have resting places already - I shall be at Quebec abt 2nd week in Sep & go on Westward - If I know all the towns likely to be visited I have friends who could put me up." Signed "H.A. Haweis". There is some minor smudging to the third page. Folded for mailing with a short tear along the bottom of the fold. Very good.</p><p>The son of the Rev. John Oliver Willyams Haweis Canon of Chichester Hugh Reginald Haweis 1838-1901 was ordained after travels in Italy where he served under Garibaldi in 1860. He held various curacies in London becoming incumbent of St. James's Marylebone in 1866. His unconventional methods of conducting the service short stature and lively manner attracted large congregations. He traveled abroad a good deal and was Lowell lecturer in Boston in 1885. He had a great interest in music and wrote books on violins and church bells. His best-known book was "Music and Morals" 1871 which went through sixteen editions before the end of the century.</p> Queens House, Chelsea, London, March 28, 1886.

A tight bright fine example. Laid in is a short typed note dated at Newark N.J. October 14th 1894 and signed "Yours truly/ Thos. Dunn English'. Thomas Dunn English 1819-1902 was Philadelphia native who spent most of his life in neighboring southern New Jersey. In addition to being an author poet and songwriter he was a U.S. Congressman 1891-95. His most famous piece was "Ben Bolt" 1843 that was published in the New York Mirror. English was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe but broke with him over a scandal concerning Frances Sargent Osgood and Elizabeth Ellet. Skeptical of Poe's side of the story the two engaged in a fistfight; thereafter Poe attacked English's work in print and English responded in kind one of English's published pieces resulted in a successful libel suit against him by Poe. <br/><br/> Privately Printed hardcover
