AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, OF 19TH-CENTURY DEPICTIONS OF PYRENEAN SCENERY, executed in lithography (often hand-colored), aquatint, and engraving. ***(1) An unusually fine set of Melling's large folio "Voyage pittoresque dans les Pyrenees francais" (1826-1830), complete with 72 delicate aquatints, a map, a lithographed portrait of the artist, and the text by Cervini. Attractively bound and with clean, unfoxed plates (most unusual for this book). ***(2) TWO fine sets of Victor Petit's folio "Souvenirs des Pyrenees", with about 50 lithographs per set. The first set is beautifully hand-colored on fine wove paper; the second set uncolored on chine. As usual with these albums, the sets offer interesting bibliographical differences. ***(3) Two beautiful sets (30 lithographs per set) of Petit's folio "Bagneres de Luchon et ses environs", one colored and one uncolored on chine. ***(4) Two excellent (and different) complete sets of Ciceri's "Les Pyrenees dessinees d'apres nature", both very fresh, in their original bindings. ***(5) Two copies (one colored, one uncolored) of "Alpes et Pyrenees" (1842), both in publisher's cloth. ***(6) Several additional albums by Gorse (two, one with rectangular lithographs and one with oval), Allom, and others, including a few miniature albums. Many of these items are quite rare, and all are in very good condition. Several hundred prints in all. An outstanding collection. (I may consider selling one or more items separately. Please enquire.)
Translated from the original Latin of Cornelius Van Bynkershoek, 1 vol. 8vo, original full leather binding, Published by Farrand & Nicholas, Philadelphia, also by Farrand, Mallory & co, Boston, P. H. Nicklin & Co, Baltimore, D. Farrand & Green, Albany; Lyman, Mallory & Co, Portland, and Swift & Chipman, Middlebury, Fry and Kammerer, Printers, 1810, 1 f. blanc, 1 f. n. ch., xxxiv-218 pp. , pp. 249-251 (Index from another book) et 1 f. blanc Very good copy in its contemporary binding (slighlty rubbed, foxing) coming from Caesar Augusts Rodney' library (contemporary signature of C.A. Rodney on title page, and 4 autograph lines written by "C.A.Rodney A.G." to "William Lee"). Caesar Augustus Rodney (1772 – 1824) was an American lawyer and politician from Wilmington, Delaware.Member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he served in the Delaware General Assembly, as well as a U.S. Representative and Senator, and became U.S. Attorney General (A.G.) on January 20, 1807, named by President Thomas Jefferson. Unhappy about being passed over for a U.S. Supreme Court appointment, he resigned on December 1811. During the War of 1812, he was captain of a rifle corps which became the Delaware 1st Artillery then served at Fort Union in Wilmington, on the Canadian frontier, and assisted in the defense of Baltimore in 1814. He was the nephew of Caesar Rodney who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This title, translated by Du Ponceau (1760-1844), is important for its insights into the American reception of the civil law in the early 1800s. Anglais
A human document, with an Introduction by Barbara Hannah, 8vo paperback, Schippert & Co, Zurich, s.d. [ 1967 ], XII-128 pp. with 12 original colored drawings under an envelope pasted on guard, and autograph text in flemish on 14 leaves (letters, poems) in another one. Full Tite : The healing influence of Active Imagination in a Specific Case of Neurosis [ Unique and exceptional copy with autograph manuscripts and 12 original drawings: Anna Marjula mystery solved ! ] Unique copy with 12 original colored symbolical drawings sometimes (3 of them with comments in english) and 14 leaves with manuscript text (3 letters and poems) in flemish. Most of this extra-material is not signed except three letters (two dated 13-5-73 and 28-10-74) signed "Tante Han" or “Hanna”, clearly original work by "Anna Marjula", pseudonym used to protect the identity of the author (The letter "E". On an envelop is written : "These drawings illustrate the fifth conversation with the Great Mother pages 26-27". Many early jungian analysts worked with Anna Marjula (Toni Wolff, Emma Jung or Barbara Hannah), but her real name remained unknown, until now (but we knew it was a pianist). Indeed, our research allowed us to identify the recipient, Ms. Parvati Chavoix-Jodjana ("Vati") but especially the author, who hides behind the pseudonym of Anna Marjula : the famous dutch pianist and composer Hanna Beekhuis (1889-1980) ! A newspaper clipping is joined on a postcard, (that we join), titled : "Gouden medaille voor Hanna Beekhuis" and here's the translation : "Gold medal for Hanna Beekhuis: Arnhem, 3 Oct. - The Dutch composer of chamber music works and songs, Hanna Beekhuis from Ellecom, who currently resides in Zurich, has won a gold medal and an honorary diploma with "Reflet du Japon", a composition for viola and viola at an international competition held in Buenos Aires". It is known she won this medal in 1961. Hanna Beekhuis resided in Zurich, and was previously in relationship with Carl Jung (28 letters or copy of letters between Jung and Hanna Beekhuis, from 1942 until 1960, would be kept in the ETH-Bibliothek). Barbara Hannah explains in her preface that “Professor Jung had, however, once spoken to Anna of including it in a volume of case histories, and, as he died before he had collected the other cases, she was naturally disappointed”. We identify well the identical writing of "Aunt Hanna" with that present on the handwritten drawings, and with the only autograph word reproduced in the work - "Eve". Our incredible copy comes from Parvati Chavoix-Jodjana, daughter of a famous javanese dancer in France, Raden Mas Jodjana (1893-1972) and his wife Raden Ayou. Hanna Beekhuis accompanied the dancer in the 1920s. Another interesting relation with Jungian Psychanalysis is that the Jodjana were friends with Kurt Binswanger and his wife Erica since 1935. Here's some translated extract on a signed letter : “You said me that your Father has become your Guru. What is a guru ? [… ] Your father told me that he was a free thinker. I am that too but Christianity [ … ] is still in blood”. In another one : "The Jodjanas" have meant a lot to me in the course of my life, especially your father, [ … ] your mother too”. Anglais
Seven books in two volumes, complete. AN OUTSTANDING SET, IN FIRST STATE AND ABSOLUTELY COMPLETE, OF THE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF ONE OF THE RAREST, MOST IMPORTANT, AND BEST-PRODUCED GENEALOGICAL WORKS OF THE 18th CENTURY. 1 leaf; xxxvii pp.; 1 leaf; 30, 457 pp.; 4 leaves; 533 pp. plus 16 genealogical tables on 10 inserted leaves; 8 double-page genealogical tables; one larger folding double-page genealogical table; 10 etched and engraved plates (mainly views of estates); and 19 fine portraits (COMPLETE, incuding 18 mezzotints engraved by John Faber, and an engraving by William Henry Toms after Van Dyck and Lempriere. The five Rawdon portraits, intended for a different work but sometimes inserted into this one, are not present). The introduction is in the first state, before the cancelation of p. xxxvii (later copies have xli pages in the introduction). Moreover, pp. [453-460] of volume II, printed in 1765 and rarely found, are present. This set is extra-illustrated with an engraved portrait (1807) of John Perceval in volume I and with an engraved view (1783) of Enmore Castle in volume II. Lowndes, who examined only second-state copies of this work, asserts that pp. 446-447 of volume II are missing. IN THE SET I OFFER THESE PAGES ARE PRESENT. (The reason for this discrepancy is that quire Lll of volume II was re-set to eliminate a lengthy--two page--screed on the privileges of the nobility. That screed is present in the copy I offer, but in few others.) Lowndes also mistakenly calls for a map of part of the estate of John Perceval, which was in fact printed long after this work and does not form part of it, although it is sometimes found bound in. The fact that almost all of the portraits are executed in mezzotint indicates how small the press run was: only 25 to 50 impressions of a mezzotint could be taken before the plate would have shown signs of wear (and the impressions in this set are uniformly rich and brilliant). A few of the known sets of this work, indeed, are missing the portraits (which is even more understandable since the mezzotint portraits were engraved after the book was printed, some of them as late as 1747). The dozens of in-text coats of arms (and the vignettes on the fly-titles of all of the individual books) are engraved on copper, not wood, demonstrating that no expense was spared in the production of this lavish publication. The attractive engraved Northwick armorial bookplate (motto: "Par ternis suppar") in each volume. Beautifully printed on fine handmade Dutch laid paper, with the title-pages printed in red and black. Royal 8vo. ELEGANTLY BOUND BY SAMUEL CHARLES SMITH (signed) c. 1810 in full forest green morocco, covers gilt, spines elaborately gilt in six compartments. All edges gilt. Only tiny traces of wear, else A BRIGHT AND FINE SET. Lowndes I, 40 (giving an extensive collation); Lewine, p. 28; Graesse I, 116; Brunet I, 262; Moule DXLII (giving an astronomical price of 15 to 30 guineas in 1822.) Very rare. An important source for Norman and English history, and an impressive example of 18th-century English book production at its finest.
First edition, small 8vo (131 x 81 mm), [24], 112, 117-172pp., (i.e. 168pp., as 113-16 omitted in the pagination), mounted woodcut frontispiece of a male archer, early ownership signature to title partially erased, upper corner of D1 restored with a loss of a few letters which have been added in ms. blank lower corner of M3 repaired, occasional light soiling and staining, marbled endpapers, eighteenth-century green morocco, tooled in gilt, overall a very good copy. Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."?Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 ?6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 ?5000. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary quarter brown morocco. Red boards. Staining on the red cloth. Roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 64 p. Extremely rare first and only edition of this Turkish guide to the Turkish delegation of intelligence officers formed within the Niedermayer-Hentig Expedition, also known as the Kabul Mission to carry out counter-activities in the region against the British and Russian alliance, to return from India, through Russia, Afghanistan, and Iran, published after the expedition failed in 1916. This work both in very rare institutional holdings and market rarity is probably printed in no more than 100 copies. It was expected from the Turkish delegation, organized by Ömer Fevzi Bey, who was in charge of the Eastern Branch of the Turkish Intelligence (Teskilât-i Mahsûsa), by reaching Afghanistan through Iran and bringing "Jihad-i Akbar" to this country, to provide an important ally on the Indian border and to support the pro-independence Indian committees and an uprising against the British rule in India and the region. This book was prepared by the Ottoman Army Headquarters-General Intelligence Branch in 1916, during the First World War. In its introduction, the commission described their purpose of publishing this book, which is providing secret information to officers and other staff of the Ottoman army who will travel to Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia, telling them which roads to use, how to use their passports, where and how much food they need to take with them, etc., otherwise being a very comprehensive and detailed guide to the officers. The first chapter includes Iran and its environment, and the second chapter includes Russia and its environment. The first addendum contains detailed passport information, and the second part consists of the routes and towns requiring passports. According to the introduction, references of this book are some early British sources and reports by "Kralliik siyasi ve sehbenderhane zâbitâni, sabik müsahid atasemiliteri" H. Smith, "Harbiye Nezâreti Erkân-i Harbiye-i Ummiyesinden" A. D. Geddesi and "Istihbarat Subesinden" Captain S. M. Gibbon. Additionally, they are Foreign Ministry's 'tahrirât' documents, Intelligence Branch's 'kuyudâti', and a Russian railways guide printed in 1909. The Niedermayer-Hentig Expedition was a diplomatic mission to Afghanistan sent by the Central Powers in 1915-1916. The purpose was to encourage Afghanistan to declare full independence from the British Empire, enter World War I on the side of the Central Powers, and attack British India. The expedition was part of the Hindu-German Conspiracy, a series of Indo-German efforts to provoke a nationalist revolution in India. Nominally headed by the exiled Indian prince Raja Mahendra Pratap, the expedition was a joint operation of Germany and Turkey and was led by the German Army officers Oskar Niedermayer and Werner Otto von Hentig. Other participants included members of an Indian nationalist organization called the Berlin Committee, including Maulavi Barkatullah and Chempakaraman Pillai, while the Turks were represented by Kazim Bey, a close confidante of Enver Pasha. The mission failed in its main task of rallying Afghanistan, under Emir Habibullah Khan, to the German and Turkish war effort, but it influenced other major events. In Afghanistan, the expedition triggered reforms and drove political turmoil that culminated in the assassination of the Emir in 1919, which in turn precipitated the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It influenced the Kalmyk Project of nascent Bolshevik Russia to propagate socialist revolution in Asia, with one goal being the overthrow of the British Raj. Other consequences included the formation of the Rowlatt Committee to investigate sedition in India TBTK 13568.; Not in OCLC.

Heber was a book collector on a monumental scale, De Ricci estimated his library between two and three hundred thousand volumes. The sales took place at a time when the market was absolutely glutted and there were practically no buyers. The total realised was ?65,774, for books which had cost their late owner a good deal over ?100,000. "The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber, a bibliomaniac if there ever was one... From 1800 to 1830, he purchased at every London sale... He thought nothing of securing whole libraries... When he died, his books filled two houses in London, one at Hodnet, one at Oxford, one at Ghent and one at Paris, not to speak of smaller stores at... other Continental cities. The total number of volumes in his library must have been between two and three hundred thousand, and it is doubtful whether any private individual has ever owned so large a library... The London sales produced ?56,744, for books which had cost their late owner over ?100,000. The market was absolutely glutted and there were practically no new buyers... The Heber catalogues, although... arranged in the most inconvenient manner, are daily consulted by every bibliographer... His series of Continental books, early Italian and Spanish works, later Latin poetry, humanistic treatises... were unrivalled... The real strength... was, however, in the field of early English literature... For thirty years he... purchased nearly every item which came on the market".?De Ricci, p.102. Organised according to the residences where Heber kept his libraries, the present catalogues number 1 - 13 and were held in 1834, 1835, 1836 & 1837. Sotheby's managed the sale for parts 1- 3 and 9 - 10; R. H. Evans, for parts 4 and 6 - 8 and 11; B. Wheatley, parts 5 and 12-13.
Rarissima. View of the feast of St. Andrew in Amalfi , taken from a drawing by Louis Jean Desprez. Amalfi celebrates St. Andrew, patron saint of the city, twice a year, on Nov. 30, the other June 27 anniversary of the miracle that saved the city from the invasion of Amalfi pirate Kair -Ad- Din said Barbarossa in 1544. St. Andrew is the patron of fishermen from all over the world, fishmongers and all those that have to do with fishing . The celebrations of November 30 , participates in the entire population, and it is on this occasion that happens the "miracle of St. Andrew " , in many ways very similar to the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of San Gennaro.Likely that the realized design Desprez during his trip to Italy, during which describes a lot of places in southern Italy , then iconographic basis for the " Voyage Pittoresque " by the Richard de Saint-Non.Aquatint printed with bistro ink, slightly trimmed within the marginal line, small cracks of paper, otherwise in excellent condition. An extremely rare work. Frölich, Johan Fredrik Martins gravyrer, Stockholm, 1939, 291 II.

Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis, with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson, this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile, Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes, which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition, may be reckoned, as a leading one, the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance (of these) are not equal to the work of government, filched by them from a blindly confiding people. A profession proverbially selfish and dishonest can not produce statesmen, however fecund it may be of politicians. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. These manuscript annotations make this copy UNIQUE, and very worthy of further study. W150. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this extremely important compilation of legal and historical writings relating to English legal and political history from Anglo-Saxon times down to the Civil War. 12, 412, 60, 68, 15 pp. LEAVES Nn3 AND Qq4 ARE BOTH PRESENT IN TWO STATES (CANCELLANDUM AND CANCELLANS). This bibliographical quirk is entirely unrecorded: no source mentions any cancels in this volume. Each of the three tracts has a separate title-page, but the pagination is continuous. Printed mainly in Roman types, but with many words and phrases printed in black letter (Gothic) types. The appendix is taken entirely from the Domesday book, and is thus in Latin. The extensive glossary (68 pp) represents an important advance in English legal lexicography. Many terms in this glossary are given in Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. Folio. Beautifully bound in 19th-century half morocco and marbled boards. Binding somewhat worn at extremities, but still very solid and attractive. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and important book, perhaps unique in this state.
La tecnica dell’acquatinta, conferisce all’opera quel particolare tono simile all’acquarello rendendo le opere molto affascinanti. Aquatint printed in bistro ink, 1781, signed in plate at lower right and dated at lower center. Magnificent proof, printed on coeval laid paper with watermark, thin margins, light abrasions on verso, overall in excellent condition. One of the four famous Roman carnival views engraved by Sandby from a drawing by David Allan (Alloa 1744 - Edinburgh 1796). To the great majority of paintings, engravings, watercolors and drawings that illustrate the festivities of the Roman carnival with an excess of "color", is contrasted this series, which describes those same festive events with a dry and witty look while noting the hidden elegance and sumptuousness. Sandby's aquatints are taken from a series of ten drawings by Allan made during his Roman sojourns and now housed in the Royal Collection of Windsor Castle. Paul Sandby was a landscape painter and printmaker. David Allan was one of the first painters in Scotland to record the everyday life of ordinary people. He was based in Rome from around 1767 to 1777 where he painted historical subjects, portraits and the everyday life around him in a series of watercolours. In Scotland he enjoyed a successful career as both an artist and a teacher of art. Some of David Allan's watercolours of Rome were copied by Paul Sandby in London, as prints. The technique of aquatint (used here) allowed the engraver to create the effect of colour washes with the addition of etched lines for detail. This is a technique that provides an additional layer of meaning to the scene. The aquatint allows tonal variation and contrast which in turn creates atmosphere. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the print, and any British observer at the time would have received a good impression of what Rome was like from this print. Sandby's re-creation of Allan's watercolour would have made the image much more accessible through multiple copies. Only the most popular or marketable images would be copied as prints. The composition is quite complex. The background of the street and buildings is rendered with single point perspective, where the landscape appears to recede away to a single point in the distance. The viewpoint Allan chose was a low one. This means that the buildings appear to loom over the scene and a lot of sky is shown. In contrast, the action on the ground occupies only the lower third of the composition; Allan did not "zoom in" on any one aspect but created a general view of the scene. In this view, two British travellers on horseback are confronted by the extravagant costumes and masked figures from the entertainers at a Roman carnival. Despite their politeness these grotesque figures are slightly disturbing. Perhaps this scene demonstrates the alien and disorientating feeling of visiting a new city and discovering bizarre customs which the traveller has never experienced before.
Edited by William B. Slater and Arthur J. Sarl, with map and illustrations, 8vo full original red cloth, John Murray, Albemarle Street, London, 1907, xvii-380 pp. with a folding map Good condition (very small lack on top joints, otherwise a very good copy) for this copy, complete with the 12 illustrations and the folding map, in which was joined an original photographic portrait of George Manington, signed on a paper pasted on the verso, by himself ! This portrait, preserved under silk paper, appears highly scarce, and no other portrait of George Manington appears to be available or published. As explained in the editors' note, "though well under forty years of age, he had been a student in France and Germany, a prospective doctor in Paris, a soldier in Algeria and Tonquin, a man of commerce in Indo-China, an interpreter, traveller, and journalist in South China, besides a participator in more fleeting occupations in many lands, including Japan and the Philippines. [... ] An educated gentleman, Mr Manington has given an insight into the unusual experiences of an Englishman in the French Foreign[Pg xiii] Legion, such as no ordinary "mercenary" could have done".
