First and Only book of Kipling in the Ottoman-Turkish world. First Edition. Cesur kaptanlar. [= Captains courageous]. Translated by Kamuran Serif [Saru]. Captains Courageous is an 1897 novel, by Rudyard Kipling, that follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the North Atlantic. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's, beginning with the November 1896 edition. The following year it was published in its entirety as a novel, first in the United States by Doubleday, and a month later in the United Kingdom by Macmillan. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. In 1900, Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy," praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do.". The book's title comes from the ballad Mary Ambree, which starts, "When captains courageous, whom death could not daunt". Kipling had previously used the same title for an article on businessmen as the new adventurers, published in The Times of 23 November 1892. Translator Kamuran Serif Saru was famous with his Shakespeare translations into Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish. Özege: 2971.

The sultans of the Ottoman Empire traditionally shaped the arts of their day, and their enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of photography was to be crucial in the development of photography in the Empire. This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. The first two editions treated the story of photography in the Ottoman Empire from the announcement of its discovery in 1839 up to 1919, but this new edition has been extended up to the year 1923 when the Turkish Republic was founded. Researching the history of photography is an unending task requiring a lifetime's dedication."

This is a very good hardcover copy in red and black marbled paper-covered boards and a brown cloth spine and corners. Recently de-accessioned from a small public library (non-circulating), and bearing a few of their marks including a painted label on the spine, bookplates inside the covers, handstamps and a perforation stamp to the title pages. Occasional handstamps to the plate description pages facing the plates. Plates clean. There are 30 monochrome plates and 12 chromolithographs including the title-page. The plates are quite beautiful and show objects like royal jewelry and old church artifacts, some armament and some antiquities like small public statuary and memorials. 13" high X 10" wide, 84 page text + plates. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
Very Good Turkish Original albumen print mounted on cardboard. 21x48 cm. Handwritten Turkish note at the lower on empty section. Dated July 19, 1937. Slight fading on board. The photo is in very good condition. It was very significant both politically and militarily showing a Turkish war fleet visiting the British navy in Valletta, the capital of Malta, in 1937. The commander of the fleet was Admiral Sükrü Okan (1880-1957). The Turkish fleet consisted of the cruisers and destroyers named Yavuz Selim, Adatepe, Tinaztepe, Kocatepe, and Zafer, as well as four submarines and the submarine mothership Erkin. This very scarce photograph shows the Turkish fleet with the English fleet in the Valletta port on July 19, 1937.

A fine impression, printed on ivory wove paper, with margins, good condition. Malcolm Charles Salaman (London 6 September 1855 – 22 January 1940) was an English author, journalist and critic. He was educated at University College School and at Owens College, Manchester. Although he had studied mechanical engineering for four years, he became a journalist, and edited two weekly papers. His critical writing was devoted chiefly to prints and to plays. From 1883 to 1894 he was dramatic and art critic for the Sunday Times, and from 1890 to 1899 was on the staff of The Graphic. He wrote regularly on prints for the art magazines The Studio and Apollo. Salaman also wrote the introductions to the 33 volume series Modern Masters of Etching published between 1925 and 1932 by The Studio, each of which contained reproductions of 12 prints by a great etcher. This series included volumes on Frank Brangwyn, Alphonse Legros, Ernest Stephen Lumsden, Malcolm Osborne and Edmund Blampied. Hugh Fisher initially dedicated himself to landscape and architectural engraving, however he was also an accomplished etcher and engraver of portraits, figure studies and animal depictions.
