Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: <br/><br/>"Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." <br/><br/>Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere.<br/><br/>The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish.<br/><br/>That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself.<br/><br/>John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

22140See Lowe Arnott and Robinson English Theatrical Literature 1163-1172. Fine copies. 5 vols 4to uniformly bound with attractive tan paper spines period-style and sprinkled paper boards with manuscript titles on the spines. A gathering of five important pamphlets dealing with the acrimonious dispute between two groups of partners of the Covent Garden Theatre - usually referred to as the "Proprietors' Dispute" - a quarrel that began in 1767 when two of the partners Thomas Harris and John Rutherford attempted to insert mistresses - particularly one Mrs. Lessingham - into the theatre company and have them cast in unsuitable roles. Harris and Rutherford squared off with George Colman and William Powell the opposing partners for over a year of accusations and counter accusations that resulted in a legal squabble and a classic pamphlet war. The contents of the pamphlets are informative not only with regard to the dispute itself but they also document everyday operations of the Covent Garden Theatre and theatrical management of the period in general. With the exception of some minor foxing browning and stains the pamphlets are in very good condition with wide margins. In all Lowe describes ten pamphlets dealing with the Proprietors' Dispute; rarely are five found together. Full description of each volume upon request. <br/><br/> unknown books

Because the sheets were sold unbound it is possible that they were issued as parts. 31 leaves from the Apocrypha E4 through I2 are misbound into Volume IV. In their correct spot are bound 2 blank leaves. Old Testament and New Testament have separate title-pages. With a chart page after the Old Testament and after the New Testament. Bible is complete. Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards. Ink title to spine of each volume. Previous owner's bookplate and signature dated 1770 on front pastedown of each volume. Title-page of each volume with some old ink manuscript notes to top margin. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Some minor staining and wrinkling to bottom margin of signature Iii. Overall very good or better copy. Just two years after Joseph Bentham published this present copy his Bible of 1762 was marked the "standard edition" according to Darlow & Moule. Herbert 1131. Broadside 36 x 12 cm woodcut headpiece. Nine four-line stanzas. Attractive oval stamp in the lower margin of Peter Henry Chymist. A typical doggerel poem and somewhat bawdy written in the form of a slip ballad which begins "You young men all both far and near / Listen a while and you shall hear / Take care you're not drawn in a snare / By the girls that do love brandy / Wack Fla la &c." Printed on India Paper. x 586; ii 188 pp. Thirteen folding maps or plans some with colored outlines five folding.<br/><br/>Contemporary purple velvet binding ca. 1844 with gilt board edges and clasps stamped "Bagster" upper cover with gilt onlay engraved "Polyglot Bible / English Version". Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. An attorney by profession Brockett 1788-1842 was a dedicated antiquarian with an interest in philology printing and book collecting. His 1818 Hints on the Propriety of Establishing a Typographical Society in Newcastle led to the founding of that society. Brockett assembled remarkable collections of books medals and coins and the sale of part of his library in 1823 through Sotheby's lasted fourteen days and raised more than £4000. That sale catalogue notes numerous bindings bearing his arms by the great London binder Charles Lewis 1786-1836. The present binding is unsigned but of a very high quality suggesting it may also be an example of Lewis' work for presentation or for the author's own shelf.<br/>The regular edition was printed in 600 copies. This large paper copy is about 2 inches taller.<br/>A fascinating work on dialects in the north of England in a fine binding bearing the arms of the author. Fine copy. 4to recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel marbled paper boards gilt rules decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy dedicated to Joshua Reynolds a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface Petit Mot Pour Rire "a small joke" Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" "the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . ." and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House where it moved in 1780. Originally issued in parts the work is rarely found complete with all plates. As the publishers state "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume and in any order they please" as a consequence of which few copies have the full quota of plates.
