This map of St. Peters in Newfoundland was part of the fourth book "The West-India Navigation" published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1751. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800. On the back of the page is a beautiful print of two Auks along with a description of the birds and their abundance in this area. These birds were eventually hunted into extinction.<br/> <br/> W. & J. Sheridan was an Irish stage actor educator and incidentally godson of Jonathan Swift and father of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan as well as a major proponent of the elocution movement. In Western classical rhetoric elocution the art of delivering speeches was one of the five core disciplines of pronunciation emerging as a formal discipline during the eighteenth century. Sheridan's lectures on the subject collected in Lectures on Elocution 1762 and Lectures on Reading 1775 provided directions for marking and reading aloud passages from literature. N. B. Many of Philips's poems including his first the Splendid Shilling which The Tatler commended as "the finest Burlesque Poem in the British Language" were composed in Miltonic blank verse. "Philips's greatest poem the two-book georgic Cyder 1708 begun at Oxford celebrates his native land and in particular Herefordshire with a combination of accurate knowledge of apples and cider making and a ‘sketch of our National History.' The botanist Philip Miller told Dr. Johnson that ‘there were many books written on the same subject in prose which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' . . . Philips taught Pope who drew on Cyder in Windsor Forest how to use Paradise Lost for un-Miltonic purposes and to suggest that paradise might still be found in England's green and pleasant land." One of the foremost architects of the Venetian Renaissance Andrea Palladio 1508–1580 based his designs on the principles of classical Greek architecture and the traditions of Roman building as described by Vitruvius. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture particularly known for his villas in the Veneto as well as his palaces in Vicenza and churches in Venice all within the Venetian Republic. His architectural theories were codified in his treatise I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura The Four Books of Architecture which exerted a lasting influence on architectural practice across Europe and the United States. Based upon earlier maps by Herman Moll published in London 1700-1750. The individual map titles are: New Engelland New York New Yersey und Pensilvania; Carolina neksteinem Theil von Florida; Virginia und Maryland; and New Founland od Terra Nova S. Laurentii Bay⦠New Schotland. There is finely engraved text at the bottom which include notes on the maps and the Iroquois Indians. These detail the most current information from the British Colonies including dozens of place names Indian Settlements roads postal information etc. They also provide: details on battles with the Indians by Col. Barnwell and Col Craven in the Carolina map details on Indian and English plantations on the Maryland and Virginia map and many other details. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann they were very prominent map publishers. business was passed to his son Christoph upon Johannâs death in 1724. Young Christoph died in 1730 and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company which was later known as Homann Erben or Homann heirs. Two of these are folded - they are in tight snug condition. At some stage rebound in board with leather spine and facings. The spine edges have wear but the binding is strong and very stable. The faces have wear and scuffing. They are strong and dignified. The front and end pages are spotted by foxing. The papertrims are bound. The contents are very firm to the binding. They are considering their age lively and engaging. They are as informative and welcoming as at publication. One of the folded plant illustration tables contentedly shows a Hottentot mother puffing serenely and happily at a marijuana pipe! There is wear and marking and staining throughout. However the bodies of the pages are clear and bold and certain despite character-instilling tanning. A useful gratifying enchanting book that rests comfortably in the hand and on the shelf. fk. In 1756 he became a prisoner of war with the entire army in Prussia. Because of his small stature he succeeded in escaping disguised as a milkmaid. He went to Warsaw where he could present to the military commander cartographic military information based upon his prison-of-war experiences. In 1760 he was a participant in the Battle of Torgau. He was lightly wounded and his horse was killed. The Prince of Saxony's intercession led to Tielke's promotion to Souslieutenant second lieutenant. In 1761 he belonged to the army of Prince Albrecht of Saxony. In 1762 Tielke's unit was stationed in Silesia. After the Seven Years' War the Saxon troops were redeployed. Tielke was promoted to Premierlieutenant and then Stabscapit n. During the War of the Bavarian Succession he commanded an artillery battery as Compagniechef. During the remainder of his career he was garrisoned mainly at Freiberg. Growing up in poverty Tielke had not received any academic training and yet he became a world-class expert on military fortifications intelligence artillery tactics and strategy. On these subjects he published several treatises which were republished numerous times and translated into English and French. His writings were acknowledged in other German principalities and by Frederick the Great of Prussia.<br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT <br /> <br /> VERY GOOD <br /> <br /> Exterior and binding: Square spines firm hinges and joints bumping to a few corners tight pages. 1716biblio740<p>This soon-to-be 300 year-old tome is a refugee from a conflagration perhaps some religiously fevered book burning of centuries past. Maybe. It certainly looks as though someone snatched it from the edge of flames. Though the work was originally published in Paris in 450 years past in 1565 this leather copy was done in Edinburgh in 1716 one of several republished works around that time signalling a revival of interest in the prolific 16th century Scottish poet and scholar George Buchanan. Since he was known for his first-wave and vigorous Reformational Protestantism this 1716 rekindling no pun intended was perhaps in reaction to the growth of popular interest in The Scottish Pretender to the English throne. In any case this copy was saved just in time to be mostly legible. All this said this is a very rare volume and an historical object and worth preserving.</p><p>Photos on request.</p> Nathanis Chitrai hardcover
