1874H5539London 1874. Paperback. Good. Published 1874 self wraps 11 pp 9.5 inches tall 24 cm very good but for small stain on front cover some corner curling. Gives accounts of the large dinners not just this one but also of a dinner held for Toole at Great Western Hotel Birmingham George Dawson Presiding on July 6th. Toole was one of the most famous actors of his day known for his roles in farces and serio-comic dramas. In July 1874 he set out on an American tour and these banquets were fare-thee-wells from his friends and colleagues. Included among the list of attendees is Charles Dickens d. 1870 -- which makes no sense. In any case his American tour was a flop and he returned to England to resume his previous career. paperback

"The very scarce first edition where the English writer served in a Mississippi regiment in the Virginia campaigns interspersed in the narrative are letters from correspondents giving their experiences in Missouri the Mississippi Valley. C.T. Chauncey Theodore Edwards was a lieutenant on the field staff The book is dedicated to Jefferson Davis. Even Nevins only had access to the 1864 edition published by J. Blackburn. Bound in red cloth decorated and ruled in gilt and blind spine lettered and decorated in gilt all edges gilt some chipping to head and short tear to upper joint near head and some light soiling small booksellers ticket of Silver Son and Nephew booksellers of Liverpool. He is vague as to where he lived and where he joined the Confederate army but by inference it seems to have been Alabama. He was sent first to Corinth Mississippi thence by railway through Chattanooga and Lynchburg to the concentrations in northern Virginia around Manassas and he seems to have taken part in all the principal battle from Bull Run to Fredericksburg. he was a great admirer of Jefferson Davis to whom this book is dedicated and a thorough sympathizer with the Confederate cause" -Coulter 20. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait 1839-1916 educator for the Blind as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824 but fell into disuse only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today the standard in reading and writing for the Blind throughout the world. Internally quite clean with the embossed dots in very good condition; small loss at head of spine and corners worn through; a very good copy now quite scarce on the market.
