First Edition, imprimatur leaf, engraved frontispiece, [4], 219, [5] pp., contemporary panelled calf, hinges partly cracked, label, a nice copy. Written by the judge, traveller, diplomatist and pamphleteer, Sir Thomas Burnet, (with the collaboration of George Duckett). In fact the correspondence between Burnet and Duffett (Roxburghe 1914) makes it clear that this was a joint production. This political satire on the statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, is far from being destitute of wit and humour and takes the form of an account of Martin Powell (fl.1709-29), the somewhat physically deformed showman who ran a celebrated puppet-show in Covent Garden. It also, of course, adopts the title of Swift's celebrated 'Tale of a Tub' (but is not recorded by Teerink-Scouten in the list of this work's spurious sequels etc.).

RARE book containing all four volumes of "A Sentimental Journey", and "A Political Romance". Irish-born English author Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) wrote and first published the "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy" in 1768 which immediately became extremely popular and helped establish travel writing as one of the dominant genres of the second half of the 18th century. "A Sentimental Journey" ends quite abruptly after its two first volumes, mid-sentence in fact, with the promise of two volumes to follow. This plan was interrupted by Sterne's death. John Hall-Stevenson, a friend of Sterne's, attempted to complete the work. Two volumes containing the continuation were published in 1769 and this rare 1774 edition includes all four volumes. 110x180mm. 328 pages. Seemingly original brown leather Hardcover. Gilt ribbed spine. Cover rubbed. and bumped on corners. Cover corners and spine edges bumped and peeling. Spine heavily rubbed and wrinkled. Inner cover and whitepages age-stained. Few pages slightly age-stained. Few pages slightly dog-eared. Rear whitepage fore edge slightly torn. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare edition of the classic book is in a surprisingly good and clean condition considering its age.
4to., Sole Edition, with a copper-engraved frontispiece and 39 copper-engraved plates (all plates with original tissue guards) , some minor foxing as usual (rather heavier on the first few plates); full contemporary roan, sides with gilt frame border stopped at corners by a full point, enclosing an arabesque frame in gilt incorporating lotus and other floral tools, back gilt with five raised bands, compartments tooled in gilt to a floral design, gilt edges, gilt doublures, BY SMART OF OXFORD, covers a little worn and rubbed, joints rubbed, back rubbed, corners lightly bruised, hinges cracked but quite sound, short closed marginal tear in front free endpaper, one or two age-stains on covers else a very good, bright copy. In this pioneering work, widely regarded as the first serious study of the subject, Simpson has attempted to devise a system for classifying fonts by type. In essence, he provides a select inventory of Norman, Early English, Decorated and 'Perp' examples throughout the country.
