Francisco Bellini lived from 1643 and 1704 was an Italian physician and anatomist who did pioneering work in nephrology as early as the age of 19 when a paper he published while a student at the University of Pisa "Anatomical Exercise on the Structure and Function of the Kidney" presented for the first time Bellini's findings that "the kidney consists of an immense number of tiny canals". Britannica. He also was an early proponent of the value of urinalysis as a tool to arrive at a sound diagnosis. Bellini later became official court physician to Duke Cosimo III and Pope Clement XI. The work is bound in full leather with gilt ruling to the cover and spine and red leather spine label with gilt lettering. The endpapers of this volume are new. The title page of this work features a woodcut vignette. A few other woodcut illustrations appear in the text showing brightly and vividly. A well-preserved folding text plate appears in the center of the volume. The exterior of this volume is mildly worn with rubbing to the edges of the covers. The binding is firm and the armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque Schorsch is present to the front paste-down. Foxing appears on the blank preliminary page growing more sporadic through the interior. The pages are generally bright with scattered marginalia or underlining in ink. Some small sections of pages are toned. Page 201 shows a chip in the bottom edge. Illustrated with engravings line drawings and devices throughout. First edition 1605. Pignoria's Mensa Isiaca is the first notable work of Egyptology. The Mensa Isaca was a bronze table-top discovered in the ruins of the Temple of Isis at Rome in 1527.This first edition of his work essentially an iconographical commentary on the large figures on the table-top appeared in 1605' Blackmer. Water stained on bottom quarter corners of most pages. But print and illustrations very clear. Sewn binding has slight loosening at bottom but is sound. The work contains the duties charges and legal status of slaves and servants in daily life notably gladiators musicians actors tax collectors and artisans. Pignoria's work constitutes an interesting insight into laborious existence within families during Antiquity. A short essay by Doctor Fabricius on food and addressed to Marcus Walser closes the work.
