"Stephens joined an Illinois company that left for California on March 28 1849. The company traveled to Fort Laramie South Pass Fort Bridger and Salt Lake City before veering off to the Southern Route and Death Valley. Surviving this ordal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River. Stephens spent time in the diggings along the Merced River and at the mining towns of Chinese Camp and Fine Gold Gulch. With the beginning of the rainy season in the fall of 1850 Stephens took up farming and freighting. The verses by the abbot Lorenzo Mischiati bear affinity with Dante's Paradiso but also with the lyrics of the 20th-century popular song Volare: the poet takes flight into the upper spheres and sees beautifule "sisters" as well as genies and heroes who sing the praises of the new abbot. Inconsequential to be sure but interesting and bound in extraordinarily lovely wraps. Octavo 17 cm; 16 pages. This is the most famous 19th c. work on Central America and a very important regional history by an anti-clerical and liberal historian Lorenzo Montufar y Rivera Maestre 1823-1898 who as foreign minister of Costa Rica helped organize the Central American defense against William Walker and was frequently exiled for his opposition to the dictator Rafael Carrera. Bancroft and many other historians relied very heavily on Montufar's work and thus his subsequent influence on both English and Spanish language histories has been quite substantial. A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow's trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman and defended his right to have multiple "wives" as a matter of religious freedom. This copy with "From the Author" on the top margin of the title wrap apparently presented as a gift from Curtis. For the Author unknown books
