Small NY State Library stamp on the margin of the first page with a small withdrawal stamp in the margin of the last. Some soiling to the outer leaves. <br /> <br /> Announces a convention to be held at Cincinnati on May 19 1868 and promotes Lorenzo Sherwood's candidacy for President. The League was an attempt to combat the railroad monopoly and thereby to reduce fares for freight. Sherwood 1810-1869 a legislator lawyer abolitionist and political nonconformist spent 10 years in Texas prior to the Civil War working as an attorney representing shipping and freight concerns. The outset of the war found him in New York on business where he stayed. An outspoken abolitionist and advocate of extreme versions of Reconstruction including military occupation of the South he was a notable figure of the time. Much of the text here consists of newspaper extracts many from the Washington Great Republic touting the organization activities and Sherwood's candidacy. Oxford American National Biography. Text written in legible hand.</p> <br /> <p>Accounts of a farmer from the town of Middleborough which show entries ranging from purchased foodstuffs to money received for work mowing and plowing fields and cutting and delivering cords of wood. These accounts show the date the work or item and the payment. Several notes reveal that farmhands moved onto the property at various times: "1844 William Tinkham moved in to my house. Novem 4th 1842 William Carter moved into my house." There is a record of payment for work performed by temporary employees of farm in Middleborough.</p> <br /> <p>There are a few pages which indicate that the farmer whose name is not shown may be Lorenzo Wood 1792-1860. One page shows "A. Dearborn & Co. to Lorenzo Wood to fourteen cords of oak wood delivered at the depot in Middleboro at four dollars and a half. October 30 1847." A tantalizing note near the end of the book reads: "Joshua Wood Esq. Newport RI Mariah Wood Ichabod Lorenzo Leonard P. Wood Lorenzo Wood" with no further explanation but perhaps provides some indication of the origins of this family.</p> <br /> <p>A few names of customers include Zenubble Pratt Luen Perry Col. Charles Soule Ira Tinkham and Capt. Sylvanus Warren likely 1785-1872. Middleborough incorporated in 1669 was once called the shoe capital of the world. In 1850 it had less than 6000 residents.</p> . unknown

1830636New York 1830. Very good. Broadside form approximately 12.5 x 8.25 inches. Formerly mounted with some adhesive remnants at top edge. Light creasing at lower edge. Faint foxing. A subscription form for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company which sought to attract colonists to land granted to Lorenzo de Zavala Joseph Vehlein and David G. Burnet in southeast Texas in the early 1830s. The present form is completed for one of the principal land owners in the scheme Lorenzo de Zavala and is signed by him on the verso. Zavala went on to play a major role in the Texas Revolution and became the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas. "The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York on October 16 1830 for the purpose of colonizing the lands assigned to the empresarios Joseph Vehlein David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala. The colonization contracts covered an area in East Texas lying east of the San Jacinto River and south of a line running twenty leagues north of Nacogdoches 3743163 acres. The company a real-estate promotion firm with agents land counselors surveyors and salesmen did not own land itself but sold scrip that allowed the settlers simply to move into the area allotted to the three empresarios. There the settlers had to complete all requirements of the Mexican colonization law before they could obtain title to land" - Texas State Handbook Online. "The certificate lists by date the four grants there were two grants to Vehlein to the three empresarios and gives the boundaries of the resulting tract. At the end is a provision that the location of the land is to be under the supervision of the agent 'residing on the land' of the Trustees who on surrender of the scrip reports to the Commissioner appointed by the Government who issues titles 'Subject to the payments required by the Laws of the State'" - Streeter.
