The wood-engraved illustrations by Gwen Raverat are described by Colin Franklin The Ashendene Press page 243 as 'the only worthwhile original illustrations in an Ashendene book'. The Ashendene Daphnis et Chloe was intended for publication in 1931 but that edition was printed on Japanese vellum and because the sheets were packed before the slow-drying ink had sufficiently hardened all but 10 copies had to be destroyed. First Vizetelly edition ordinary issue reprinting the translation from the Greek by C.V. Le Grice first published in 1803. The plates are full page copperplate engravings from designs by Eisen Gerard and Prudhon originally published by Didot in 1800 and the head and tailpieces are reproductions of designs by Philip of Orleans for an edition of 1718.
