According to Eleanor Garvey "The Artist and the Book" p. 122 this work is "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books."<br /> An ancient Greek novel written during the Roman Empire the only known work of the 2nd century CE Greek novelist and romance writer Longus translated by George Thornley in 1657 the story of Daphnis and Chloe inspired the French-Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol 1861-1944 to create an extensive set of sometimes mischievous woodcuts of nymphs and lovers using the same classical lines that typify his sculpture. The format of the book is particularly suited "to the black and white balance of the decorated page" François Chapon. The images the luscious hand-made paper the sensual tone of the engravings all contribute to this piquant book meant to educate and titillate the "young beauties" to whom the book is dedicated. The Epistle Dedicatory reads "To Young Beauties". "The ceremonies customes & manners of the ancient Greekes; with delightfull interspersion of their old and sweet Tales: And in short; nothing to vex you unless perchance in your own conscience. A. Hand-numbered in black ink and signed by illustrator in pencil on limitation page. Lacks slipcase. Boards slightly bowed light stain to marginal corner of frontispiece does not affect image. 1972 Hard Cover. 152 pp. 8vo. Turquoise leather spine over paper-covered boards gilt titles. Designed and produced in Switzerland by Max Caflisch printed on Zerkall laid paper. Includes seventeen aquatints created by Felix Hoffmann specially for this edition. Translated from the original Greek by Christopher Collins. The only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. A tender novel describing eager and inept young love Daphnis and Chloe tells the story of a baby boy and girl who are discovered separately two years apart alone and exposed on a Greek mountainside. Taken in by a goatherd and a shepherd respectively and raised near the town of Mytilene they grow to maturity unaware of one another's existence until the mischievous god of love Eros creates in them a sudden overpowering desire for one another. A masterpiece among early Greek romances attracting both high praise and moral disapproval this work has proved an enduringly fertile source of inspiration for musicians writers and artists from Henry Fielding to Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Maurice Ravel. Longus transforms familiar themes from the romance genre including pirates dreams and the supernatural into a virtuoso love story that is rich in insight humorous and ironical in its treatment of human sexual experience. 1934002243France 1934. First Edition presumed. Wraps made of 18th Century French Vellum Documents. Near Fine. No text with fifteen color lithographed plates of a softcore sensibility with nudity. The only words in the story proper is the title rendered in Cyrillic. The illustrations are far from lewd yet do have a delicious kitschy quality of the second-rate book illustration and they were in their time meant to give the viewer a frisson of excitement from partaking of something mildly naughty and taboo. The illustrations feel anachronistic fitting more squarely in the twentieth century than the classical world being portrayed but perhaps that is also their charm. No one could find the illustrations pretentious or overblown and if nothing else they do capture a simplicity and innocence that are at the core of the tale. Perhaps the most special aspect of the booklet is the wraps or outer wraps to be precise made up of two sheets of vellum documents from the mid-18th century that may have come from a Royal Archive. These sheets were clearly meant to conceal the erotic contents. One of the documents is signed Besnard P and is a letter dated 25 9bre 1734 with a seal of the city of Rouen. Back to the Daphis and Chloe a few of the plates bear a stylized device of what appears to be "LG" and above the date of 1934. <br/><br/> hardcover books
