This version the final book published by the Ashendene Press other than their own bibliography is one of the loveliest: the woodcuts by Gwendolen Raverat the marginal notes in red and the initial capitals filled in by hand by Graily Hewitt all form a harmonious whole that pleases the eye and the mind.

The translation of Jacques Amyot published in 1559 was the first vernacular edition and remains widely used. Many of us are familiar with the sad tale of the first printing of this book which had to be destroyed due to the sheets having been packed before the ink had sufficiently dried; deeming the results unworthy of the Press Hornby ordered all but 10 specimen copies to be destroyed and the entire book re-printed.

___DESCRIPTION: Original binding of green paper boards with a vellum back and vellum tips with a gold stamp on the cover being a vignette of Daphnis and Chloe with some lambs encircled with greenery fore- and bottom edges uncut plain endpapers title page in red and black the 26 woodcut illustrations scattered throughout the text text in French red marginal notes throughout blue initials and paragraph indicators printed in Ptolemy type on Batchelor paper; quarto size just over 10" tall pagination: i-iv being the half-title and title pages i-iv being the Editor's Preface 1-162 colophon page. The ANS is on a small sheet approximately 8" by 5" headed "Shelley House / Chelsea Embankment S.W. 3." and has a hand-written note covering the front and about a third of the back dated 1 June 1934 and signed "C St.J Hornby"; the blank order form is printed on vellum is approximately 7.25" by 5" printing in red and black setting forth the prices for the copies on paper 6 guineas and on vellum 40 guineas.
