With numerous engravings illustrations throughout the text from Jules Theophile Schuler 1821-1878 a French painter and Romantic illustrator as well as other artists. This is a wonderful collection of historical fiction novellas written by Erckmann-Chatrian. These books were well-read within France at the time for reflecting current events with historical accuracy but through the personal lens of fictionalised characters. These works were often extremely anti-monarchist leading them to be well loved by the likes of Victor Hugo and Emile Zola but criticised in the 'Le Figaro' daily newspaper. Contents include 'Le Conscrit de 1813' 'Waterloo' 'Madame Therese ou Les Volontaires de 92' 'L'Homme du Peuple' and 'La Guerre'. Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by Emile Erckmann 1822-1899 and Alexandre Chatrian 1826-1890 who both specialised in military fiction as well as ghost stories and co-wrote these works together. They wrote a range of works together from 1847 to the mid-1880s when they had a quarrel and would not produce any more stories jointly. Undated so dated from Jisc using similar copies held at the British Library as well as the University of Edinburgh and University of Oxford. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of the 'Waterloo' section of text.Collated complete. Bound in a full-calf morocco binding with Wimbledon School gilt inscription on front boards. Externally very smart. Minimal rubbing to the extremities and the spine with fading along the margins of boards and the spine. Light wear to the bands of joints. Leather prize bookplate to front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age-toning to margins and a few spots that increase in number to the first and last few pages. Very Good J. Hetzel & Cie hardcover

Text: franz.- Erckmann-Chatrian ist der gemeinsame Künstlername der französischen Autoren Emile Erckmann 21. Mai 1822 in Phalsbourg; † 14. März 1899 in Lunéville und Alexandre Chatrian 18. Dezember 1826 in Soldatenthal/Grand Soldat heute Ortsteil von Abreschviller; † 3. September 1890 in Villemomble. 010 Paris, Hetzel, 1867-68 unknown

Forten grew up in relative privilege in Philadelphia was the only African-American at Higginson Grammar School in Salem MA where she later became a member of the Anti-Slavery society where she met Emerson Sumner and Garrison who later published her poetry. She was the first black teacher to join the Sea Island's mission during the Civil War — an episode made into a film in the 1980s — where she met Robert Gould of the 54th Massachusetts and Thomas Wentworth Higginson of the 1st South Carolina the two prominent all African-American regiments. Her activism and reality were difficult bedfellows during this time which she wrote of in Atlantic Monthly as Forten as evidenced by her translating this very volume was steeped in European literature whereas her pupils were often Gullah speakers.
